Modelling with 'Blue' Styrofoam
« on: January 10, 2011, 12:53:02 PM »
After years of using foamboard, I've decide to finally take the plunge and experiment with some blue foam - I know it's not it's proper name but humour me.

I'll be cutting some fairly basic square and rectangle shapes from a 25mm thick sheet. I might to make a few recesses too.

Any hints or tips on tools and techniques for a getting the best results?

Also a serrated bread knife seems to cut quite well.

I tend to use pva glue, but I do know that there is some funky UHU foam glue out there.

Get yourself a sanding block as opposed to sand paper... it won't let you down. Also you might want to get some graded dust/fume masks since the fumes are definitely noxious. Alternatively get yourself a dremel but be away that it eats the foam

Cheers

Uhu 'Por'. Good stuff but not readily available in most shops. Buy it online.

For detailing I use a rock...stone age technology...Once you have your shape simply press the rock into the foam firmly. The resulting foam will have a rocky texture. :D

For straight cuts simple razor knife or a hobby knife with a straight edge works well.  Don't even have to cut all the way through as it will snap along the cut fairly easily.
