One can hope he passed away more peacefully than he had to live the early part of his life. I don't really set people on pedestals much (all men having the potential of being a bastard) but if only parts of how he comes across in books and films are true he hold him to be a very upstanding fellow.

That oft-repeated quote is unfortunately rather undermined by the lobbying to get him the Medal of Honor on his official website.

Still, he did what he did, and nothing can really take that away.

Enough said.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,

At 92, and with the Great War generation gone, make you wonder how long this generation of veterans will be with us!

It reads that, while the site is authorized by MAJ Winters, he doesn't run it. It sounds like other people working to get the MoH for him. Can't hold the man accountable for what others are doing or trying to do. Besides, the family request, on the same page, doesn't sound like a man begging for anything except privacy.

I did read somewhere he was recommended for the MoH just after D-Day for leading a successful assault on a German AA battery, but apparently his division had already been given it's allotment so he got the US DSC instead.

From what I've read (outside of the, IMHO, bloody awful Ambrose books) he seemed like a fundametally decent man, good luck to his family says I and RIP.

Best, Goat

If he was even close to how he was portrayed in the mini series, he would be one I'd pick to follow.  There are so few who qualify.
