Getting Started with Star Wars

My eldest son is starting to get into gaming now and while he's happy with some historical stuff he is a Star Wars NUT...As it muct be said I was too back in the day.

I've been watching the various projects over the last few months and was wondering how to get started?

Are there white metal minis or pre painted from the Star Wars boxes I've seen at my local Game shop?

Not really worried what period of thr Star Wars universe as long as there are either Clones or Stormtroopers...

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

As kids can be fickle and drift in and out why not try the following:

1) Buy some pre-paints off eBay - lets you get into the feel of the figures and basic rules (you have thought about rules have not you)
2) Get some paper based terrain - not as hard as it looks to set up

Glad to hear the next generation is excited about gaming!  My son's just 3 but he's already talking about "Star Wars and Darf Vader!"

I use WOTC's Star Wars collectible miniatures.  I usually buy them individually from eBay or one of the many companies on the web that sell the figures.  Just search for "Star Wars miniatures singles" and you'll get lots of hits.

wotc is the cheap way to get them started - its how my son started playing wargames - they are widely available, offer a massive choice, AND are painted already, so go straight on the table.

WEG - West End Games are OOP metal minis - I prefer them, personally as i'm an old school "figures are meant to be metal" gamer, but there is less to choose from, and the prices sometimes get a bit daft.

Be Aware - if you decide to go for metal minis at a later date, they aren't compatible.

Action Fleet plastic vehicles are a cheap way to get a game going, and mostly fit with either wotc, or WEG.

With the amount of big WOTC pre-paint auctions currently on ebay you can get yourself a few platoons of imperials (I've often seen big numbers of storm and clone troopers going in the US for very little money) and rebels really quickly. It'll be the easiest and less expensive (both in time and money) option to go for.

The down side is the bendy plastic but if you can live with that you'll get more options. Rebel storm release are the better sculpts and paints, the later releases get a little sloppy, but with a quick wash and some general highlights they can be made to look very serviceable.

Interestingly enough I have a couple of WEG Star Wars RPG books from the mid 80's, ahhh RPG systems of my youth!

best advice, is don't just buy the first bunch you see - there is a remarkable amount of WEG out there, and the prices these days are pretty reasonable.

On that subject, TCG pocket model ships are very cheap to pick up and there are a number of rule systems you could use them with rather than the cards:




Not my pic, but I do have a the one's pictured, they are quite nice, not perfectly scaled (difference between fighters and capital ships, and especially shuttles is iffy) but nice all the same.

Just another idea.

The bendy plastic is not a problem :

- use a hair dryer to soften the plastic and place the miniature in cold water : it's not bendy anymore
- you can repaint them if you wish
- they don't break and if it is for a child that's fantastic
- they are cheaper and easier to buy than WEG metal miniatures
