Conquest Woodland Indians WIP
« on: January 16, 2011, 09:08:31 PM »

Latest wip shots. Can't tell if they look right or not. Don't want to start inking and highlights if the skin doesn't look plausible. Any opinions?

My apologies for the camera-phone shots. PC tanked last week and I can't sort it out.

Thanks!

Pete

I'd love to give you an opinion, but I can't see a thing from here.

Looks good to me
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Very nice indeed. Sorry if this question has been asked before, how do Conquest compare size wise with the figures from Galloping Major ?

Regards

The flesh looks good to me, but I think blue war paint is probably very unusual / not historical. I wouldn't let that bother me though. It certainly looks good!

thanks for the comments! The paint is actually watered down VMC Black Grey, but it definitely has a bluish tinge to it. I'm hoping that the washes and highlights will knock it back some. I didn't want a solid black, that just didn't seem possible only using crushed up black walnuts or whatnot. That being said, I know I've seen at least one Griffing painting with one warrior wearing bright sky-blue paint (which may have just been artistic license, I guess).

Great start mate!  I'm just entering this period myself and am learning my shades and colors as well.  My plan will be to copy warpaint from references until I get comfortable with working without a net.  That being said, if I thought something looked cool, that is enough of a reason for me to do it.

Keep it up.

Ah, I use that black grey myself on occasion. I like that and/or german grey (I think) as highlights over flat black.

Thank you Galloping Major, that was very helpful. Some minor differences but nothing that would stand out to badly on the table.
I use Black grey and German Grey as a 1st and 2nd highlight on Black. I don't think you would get the depth of Black you would normally expect when placing Black onto a normal skin tone. In this instance as a 1st coat over skin tone I think it works really well.

Another thing to do with black war paint is mix in some of your flesh color for highlights. The paint was usually grease based and if reenactors are anything to go by it can run a bit / rub off on a warm day.
