Black Scorpion's CUTLASS!
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:58:52 PM »
Well, seeing the cover for the new Black Scorpion's Cutlass! game... http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/index.php , does anybody know anything about it?

It sounds like they will be supporting all of their pirates and fantasy pirates in there (including the elves and the Giant!!!  8) ), and no sea battles, but....

Any other info?  How many figs?  What kinda dice? "Static" models, or can the models "improve" their stats?  Campaign rules?

Anybody know?

Thanks!

It's astonishing to me to see miniatures companies employing professional artists to sell their stuff.  Given what I assume is the cost, I don't see Hinterland doing that any time soon.  Some art for Freebooter was recently featured in the Spectrum books, which show the best refereed fantasy and sci-fi art of the year.  Wow.  :o

By the way (and revealing how I spend time that should be dedicated to painting ;D), anyone else think the chick in the Black Scorpian artwork bears an interesting resemblance to porn starlet Giana Michaels?

Not enough visible skin in the Black Scorpion picture for an educated comparison. ::)

Looking forward to the game, though. Seems nice enough.
Significant.

A direct rival to Freebooters Fate presumably?

Clearly if you make fantasy pirate figures, a big fat rule system is a de rigeur brand extension.

Yawn. Pass the grog.

the other option on your comment is to suppose the illustration business is not on their best moment.

Our Freebooter? Freebooter's Fate? Do you have a reference?

Nope. Her face is too round and she's too thin.

I believe it's in Spectrum 17:

http://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-17-Best-Contemporary-Fantastic/dp/1599290448/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295454701&sr=8-1

However, please don't buy the book based on my assumption.  I'll try to get to the book store and check my reference.

On that note, I'd like to point out that the best decision Bjorn took with T&T was to have the latest book, i.e. the Colonial Supplement, be layouted by a professional, and get an artist to do the cover illustration. I had done both on the first two, and the newest one clearly shows the difference between an amateur and a professional approach.

I'm feeling a slight twang of embarassment in that I knew who you were referring to, but I'm not quite sure that I agree. I'd rather think that her general appearance, as a comely wench with a battery of six-pounders and long hair is generally reminiscent of the current crop or adult entertainment actrices (erm... not that I would consider myself an expert in that field. Hrm hrm).

I'll present the evidence (hoping Black Scopion doesn't mind).  Here's the comely wench from the Black Scorpion game:

And here's comely wench Giana Michaels:

They look pretty darn similar to me.   :)

Uncanny. lol

Still, I think it is just another instance of the current porn chic crawling into other areas of entertainment and popular culture rather than a direct homage or reference.

Well, having done some additional painful research, I've found some pictures in which Giana looks even more like the Black Scorpion woman, right down to the similar dimples in their chins, but I'll leave it up to interested parties to seek additional data.  ;)

Morkin: The Freebooter art is indeed cited in Spectrum 17, The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art, on page 213.  While it didn't win an award, I'm impressed it's in there at all.  Congratulations.  By the way, Werner Klocke is cited as the "art director".

I like Black Scorpion's pirates, I like skirmish games, and I like pretty rulebooks, so I will probably pick it up. Don't know when I will get around to playing it. I have Freebooter's Fate already, and have read the rules and think it would be fun to play.  But when we get together for a skirmish game, it's easier just to play Mordheim, which we all quite enjoy.  I know - lazy.
