6mm Sudan Wars
« on: 18 January 2011, 07:25:30 PM »
Boooooooooooooring post, but I have a load of "6mm" Baccus figs lying around and want to put them to good use. Lately the colonial era really has got the better of me..

BUT

I don't want to use just another warmaster modification.  lol

EDIT: I've now found Science vs. Pluck and some interesting Polemos ideas!

I think it's quite possible to distinguish one self within the 6mm frame and still keep the eyesight.  :D

But I gather from these replies that this is not the place to discuss 6mm colonials..  ;)

Yes it bloody well is. Don't listen to them.

I still enjoy Fields of Honor, quite a flexible game that can be used for most 19th Century conflicts. Can be played with any size of figure, and has an adjustable ground scale and figure ratio, depending on what size and type of game you want to play. I have played it using 15mm and 20mm figures, but it would work just as well with 6mm (with very minimal tinkering to the casualty system, as you'd probably want more than three figures on a stand at that scale), I reckon.

Very enjoyable game. Bad news: Out of Print. Sorry.  :(

I was going to suggest Black Powder, but then again, isn't that just another Warmaster modification, when it comes down to it?

'tis warmaster I think. Honestly haven't read it though. I a bit weary of rules that are too generic at the moment.

I will try to see if Fields of Honour is available somewhere somehow. I'm thinking 6mm should give me the opportunity to represent some action at 1:1  :` lol

Battle for Empire, I used these for Zulu and it produces a great game and set of rules, units are company based with 4 stands making a unit.

D6 but units have a table for each nation/tribal group and movment morale combat is based on this. I whole heartedly recommend these to anyone

For Fields of Honor in 6mm the only thing you would have to do is say that each stand can take three hits (or two for cavalry, four for artillery), regardless of the number of tiny 6mm men on it (the number of figures on a stand is how many hits it can take normally). Three 6mm figures to a stand would look silly. Easily done and wouldn't actually alter the gameplay at all.

I was going to do 6mm ACW using this method years ago, but found 6mm painting rather unfulfilling and not to my taste so gave up.

Almost any set will work with the right modifications I would think.
Irregular Miniatures produce a "Colonial Rulebox" I think - literally rules on the back of a set of post cards - I've tried the ancients version which was fun and designed for 6mm figures.

With regards painting - I found 6mm figures the easiest to do as it's more giving an impression of detail rather than multiple shading and highlight on each item of uniform.

The obvious ones for me are "Battles For Empire".  Quick, easy, company-sized units.

I ordered the "Science vs. Pluck" set now.. don't know what came over me, but I thought it sounded interesting. And it was available.

I'll probably base after another system anyway, so I can try out all the variables..  lol
