Help! Problem with matte sealant!
« on: January 21, 2011, 05:19:10 PM »
What happened?  I sprayed this morning and the front dried but some crevices in the back gathered the sealant and made the dark crevices white.

See photos, please, and someone please explain this to me - and how to fix it elegantly.

Thanks a bunch.

What do I do now?

If it's humid where you are and you used Dullcote or something similar, wait til it's less humid and re-spray. It might help.

Will re-spraying do away with the white marks?

Or do I need to re-paint over them and then re-spray?

Thanks for your advice.

And the can is very old - probably 4 years old.  I guess I should just toss it.

My condolences. Try just re-spraying it first, preferrably with a new can and in low humidity. I've had partial success that way.

As has been said before by many:
- Age of product (4 years may be too old)
- Temp and humidity while spraying
- Distance while spraying
- Clogged nozzle
- Quality of product (I have stopped using several brands whose quality has dropped off substancially including EE/GW and several others...I use Testors Dullcoat - love it!)  :-*

get a new can, 4 years, as has already been stated is probably too old.

If you were using the new formula Dullcote then too heavy a coating seems to end up satin finish and the 'white' streaking.

As Blackfriars is no longer available most people seem to have switched to Daler Rowney Soluble Matt brush on varnish but you have to use it the way Orctrader describes http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/orctrader/Articles/Varnish.html   just do a few figures at a time and when he says thin coats he does not mean thin it with thinners, just make sure you do not put excess varnish on the figure.

It works  :-*

Ah, so less is more when it comes to varnish.  Thanks.

I seem to remember placing the mini under a lamp helps (I think I kept the mini within a couple inches of the bulb).  If that doesn't help, I don't have any other ides but repaint :(

I applied a black wash to the crevices.  Lost some highlight but it's alright.

So annoying.

You can get rid of the white residue in the crevices by applying a gloss varnish.

Today I just had a little disaster myself. Despite trying to follow Antenociti's helpful guidelines to the best of my ability the Army Painter spray-on went all Mr. Frosty on me. I'm about at the end of my tether with spray matt, both Testors and now this have proved too unreliable for someone of my skill (or is it luck?) level to handle. Reckon I'm about done with spraying. It's either this or it dries gloss. Either way I'm sick of it.

The good news is that slapping on a coat of the Testors brush-on Dullcote seems to have fixed it. That's a relief.
