Brunel’s Sea Monster
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:15:13 AM »
Hey All
Im thinking of doing a little alternative history wargaming, something to do with the Union and the Royal Navy, does anyone know where I can get a 1:1200ish scale model of the SS Great Eastern?

Thanks
Marx

Ok. Had an idea.

Im thinking of using the hull of Thoroughbred's 1:600 scale Banshee I.
http://thoroughbredmodels.com/images/TS74.jpg

Its got a very simular appearence and the same length to beam ratio.

Ok, maths time.

This ship (Banshee) was roughly 200' long in real life and the model is at 1/600th scale, thus at 1/1200 it would represent a ship 400' long. At 1/2400 it would be 800'.

The Great Eastern was just shy of 700' long, so the Banshee at 1/2400 scale should be just about right I think. I think I can pass off a 100' extension without too much trouble, afterall, the union did add a ram and a forward casemate.

On another note, how would anyone arm a ship this size? any ideas?

Thanks again

Look at HMS Warrior and add more and bigger guns!
