Hey, so a rather long while back a made some posts regarding my game that I'm in the process of developing,
Portals: Worlds Collide.
I thought that you all might be interesting on reading a update of where I am in the process and an overview of the background for a couple of the factions.
Firstly, game-play has evolved a lot since last I posted here. The game is no longer dice-based (nor is it determined by card-flipping). But, more on that when I have the PDF ready to show online. The background has changed as well. The basic background of the game is that during the mid 1700s mankind has found a portal leading into a separate world. Around fifty thousand humans went through it before the Royal City of Brinkholm destroyed it, sealing those who had already gone through (including themselves) within the new world they had entered. The humans who had gone through gathered together according to their creed, forming new empires, staking out new territories. Before long they also started new wars, both upon the original inhabitants of the world and among themselves, many in attempt to find a way back to our world, others to expand new territories, even to find new worlds to take over.
Currently I have five sculpts that I'm going to be sending to the casters as soon as I'm able to: One Mystori, one Mechanical Helper, one Bog Folk with three different head options and two different arm options, one Giant Schnauzer, one Hunting Musket (that I'll cast masters of to sculpt with other figures in my range, also to be sold in packs of 8 as conversion options for other ranges). These miniatures will then be sold on the online shop that I'm setting up, hopefully the online shop will be open and they'll be on sale by early April. Any profit that I earn from that will be put towards hiring other sculptors for sculpting up the starter-set Wartribes for the four factions of the game, hiring illustrators for the rulebook and finally publishing the rulebook.
So, onto the overview of the background for the factions:
The Royal City of Brinkholm:
The Royal City of Brinkholm was built seven years ago, in the year 1752. The city is a mix of many types of folk and creature. Within it are mercenaries, inventors, opium dealers, beggars, and many more. The city is lead by aristocratic dynasties and an arcane society called The Faceless. The Brinkholmians believe that they were the first humans to have entered Spiacá, and they were certainly the first among humankind to have built up a civilization there. The city’s walls reach nearly four hundred feet in height, and encompass the entire island upon which the city stands. The Brinkholmians have the most powerful economy, and have the most established trade routes, making deals with many of the native creatures, including the Bogfolk of Bogmere. For quite some time they have been giving the Bogfolk valuable water purifying machines in payment for work in the factories of Brinkholm.
It is currently the year 1759.
The mayor of The Royal City of Brinkholm, Sir Henry Goldenass (the aristocracy of Brinkholm flaunt their wealth by way of every means possible) is ever intent on expanding his city’s boundaries. He has been commanding raids on The Resistance villages along the coast of Krakovia for quite some time now. More often than not returning Wartribes bring back prisoners from members of the Resistance, who are then either, persuaded to give information of their leader’s plans or forced into serving Brinkholm on the field of battle. Sir Henry Goldenass has many enemies. There are those who claim that he made them when he allowed The Faceless to destroy Hylf, the portal which connected earth and Spiacá together, which was to be found on the island of Hollowfield, before The Faceless destroyed it in the year 1764. This was humankind’s only way back to their original world. Even within Brinkholm, the humans were angered by this action. Mobs began forming within the streets of Brinkholm, and aristocratic civilians were targeted. Sir Henry Goldenass was quick to shift the blame upon The Resistance, saying in his memorable speech unto the citizens of Brinkholm: “these gut-spillers are guilty of more than defying us; they are guilty of crimes against all of humanity in Spiacá, an unforgivable crime against our children, and our children’s children”. Since this occurrence The Faceless have been destroying more Portals throughout Spiacá, disguised as members of the Resistance.
The Krakovian Resistance
The Krakovian Resistance is an alliance built up of nearly three hundred refugee hamlets scattered along the fringes of Krakovia. Each of these struggles for mere survival.
They are all that is left of what was to become the mighty Empire of Krakovia. Those who had high hopes for this empire fled from the construction of it when the Grias of the North came out of hibernation and began to terrorize the pioneers who were building the Empire of Krakovia from the ground up. The Gria have claimed their place as the dominant species in this bleak land by way of devouring the humans that they find, capturing them as slaves, and playing cruel blood-sports with them. Raiding parties from Brinkholm come upon The Krakovian Resistance to the east, and Gria come at them from the North, forcing even the younger members of The Krakovian Resistance to fight for survival. The wildlife within the land of Krakovia varies from area to are. In the west there are great horned beasts called Wyos (a species of herbavores) that travel in large herds, and are for the most part rather dangerous to hunt. Despite this many are willing to take the risk of tracking and killing them, not only to provide food for themselves and to obtain its valuable horn of ivory and to gut it of its blubber but also to prove their worth to the rest of their hamlet. Throughout Krakovia there are rabbits that show a great deal more intelligence than those that dwell in our world, and even have a giant rabbit (The Grakko) who looks after them.
The Krakovian Resistance hamlets defend themselves from invasions in a great many ways. They hire Yagas (descendents of the ogre Baba-Yaga) in payment for magical artifacts. Assassins called Usurpers are trained in order take down important political figures within Brinkholm who dictate invasions and spread propaganda against the refugees of Krakovia. The Guardian of Krakovia is a type of mechanical construct who go forth alongside their Mechanicus escorts upon the field of battle. They are capable of causing cannonballs to tear through enemy warriors, though not many exist due to the materials needed to build and maintain them. Every hamlet has its own militia, who loyally defend their own. The Woodsmen of Vatka Forest are vicious shape-shifters who are able to take the form of monstrous bears. These hulking beasts maul their enemies into bleeding ribbons. Though the current situation within Krakovia looks bleak, the members of The Krakovian Resistance look to their newfound sea-faring allies with a sense of hope.
My main fear of posting up a PDF online is that I think that a lot of the game mechanics (which are quite unique) might be 'stolen' and used in other game systems before I get my game released.
Does anyone know anything about how to get your ideas 'branded', as to deter 'rival companies and persons' from using your ideas w/o permission?
Do I get a copyright for the rules, or do you gents think that if I posted them on the web (on a forum that I'm making for open-beta playtesting), enough people would see it, know of its existence and who it belongs to that it would be pretty obvious to others if another took the ideas?
Comments on any and all of the above are greatly encouraged.
Thanks for reading.
