Looking For Fantasy Rulesets!
« on: January 27, 2011, 10:28:56 PM »
Hi!

I am on the look out for any fantasy rulesets out there! As part of my new years resolution I have decided to get more games and play them!

I will be reporting my progress along with reviews and battle reports over on my blog:

http://leviathanwar.blogspot.com/

Please feel free to suggest away although I dont want to use the new warhammer or warmachine/hordes as they get enough coverage as is!

I have posted my reasoning over on my blog if anyone fancies a peruse!

Well, I am about to start painting some BOFA/Warmaster minis for some LoTR themed 10mm battles. I like the system, it's quite elegant & versatile, and perfect for smaller scale minis and big battles. Plus the armies are kinda quick to paint, and they don't cost a mint. Non-GW stuff, that is.

I am using Pendraken for various human factions, Copplestone for human & evils, and I got one box of BOFA, naturally.

If Middle-Earth doesn't strike your fancy, I am told there is Warmaster historical as well?

How about Goalsystem Fantasy, it only costs 2.95$ from:

It has some good reviews. I bought it and read it (sounds like a fun system) but never got a chance to play.

What are you looking for? Mass combat or skirmish rules?

Do you want a fast easy system or one with a lot of dice to roll?

What type of time limit, for the game as a whole, are you looking for?
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity.

We usually play HotTs around here for quick & easy games. I used to play an old D6 set called Perilous Encounters. But have stopped playing that rule set, as it is OOP and nobody else seems to be able to get a set. There are a lot of fantasy rules out there though.

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestions folks!

I am actually after both skirmish and mass battle games! The skirmish ones are being used with my 15mm scale stuff, while the mass battles cover my 6mm stuff!

I currently have 24 different rulesets to try out of various sorts and have only managed to work my way through three, Song Of Blades, Skull Crusher and Fire at Will. Reviews and reports can be found on my blog:

http://leviathanwar.blogspot.com/

I am attempting to play 52 games at least this year with the intention of having as much fun with my hobby as possible. I also hope to post as many reviews as I can of the lesser known systems as they are proving to be just as much fun as the big ones like Warhammer!

All the best!

Hordes of the Things - Mass combat. Playing time (after you know the rules) 20-30 minutes. Out of print.

Savage Worlds Showdown - Skirmish. Can be used with any genre. Free.

Basic Impetus - Mass combat ancients, but has a fantasy supplement. Free.

Chipco's Fantasy Rules - Mass combat.

Warlord 2085 (Skank Rules)- Skirmish. Although billed as a post apocalyptic game, I have used it for pulp, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. 30-40 minutes. Free.

You probably have some of these in your collection of 24 rules sets.  ;)

DRESDA, the old Alternative Armies fantasy rules, using the flintloque rules.

Very nice set of rules, it comes in a box with a few minis (Plains Orcs, Mountain Orcs, Bog Orcs and Humans). The rules are for scenario-based wargaming with a GM and 2 gamers.

Spirit Games have a copy they have been trying to sell for a long time. Unfortunately, the game was one of AA's most short-lived and there are very few players of it!
I am a proud owner of it and would love to play it sometime.  :)

Hi!

Thanks for the suggestions!

I did like the look of Dresda when it first came out but wouldnt have any use for the 28mm scale stuff it comes with! Still I may have a butchers and see what price it is as I like the Flintloque system!

All the best!

For a couple of oop rule systems, you could try the AD&D Battlesytem rules by TSR.  There are both a mass combat version and a skirmish version.  The rules are usually available on ebay and can be picked up on the cheap.
So many games, so little time.

There's a copy going on eBay at the moment.

As for the miniatures, yeah I understand that. I have two sets, one of the lots of flintloque stuff I bought from a guy in Nuneaton had some muddled in there too! Ahh well, the Orcs will probably be used for Leviathan.

I'm going to recommend HAVOC: Tactical Miniature Warfare.

There is a battle report/review by a fellow Lead Adventurer that can be found here:

Some short reviews on BGG and Amazon:

full disclosure: It's my game!

I use the Fantasy Rules! by Chipco, though I went back to using their 2nd edition set.

Kings of War!

Great rule set by Alessio Cavatore of GW fame. Free, easy, fun and it even has tactical depth!
