The figures are somewhat flexible, very similar to AT-43 figures.  If I had to guess, I'd say they were made of the same plastic material.  They are less flexible than WOTC Star Wars or Wizkids Heroclix, but more flexible than GW plastics.  I've got two of the starter boxes and seen a couple of others, and thre always seeme to be at least a few weapons on the figures that are warped.  However, they can be straightened with  a little hot water.

The mechs are more like standard model styrene plastic.  I'd say it's comparable to Tamiya or Dragon kits.

Anybody know where you can get the vehicles by themselves?  I would like some of the American walker tanks for another project.

My question too - I want the mecha (for SoTR) but not the infantry: are they available seperately?

They will be available separately, but haven't been released yet. Both the axis and allies versions will include a third weapons option in addition to the two coming with the base set, which means that you can build either version with the kit. Looking at the box art at the FF site it looks like both the new versions will be armed with rockets or missiles.
