I have always found this thread and DeafNala's shared imaginings a positive and uplifting boost, the colour and just joy of it shines through.

Its one of the things I dare to say I cherish to see.

13 years... of wonder... long may it continue!

Re: The Last Hurrah Project: 11/19/24 YET ANOTHER creepy stalagmite base
« Reply #9181 on: December 01, 2024, 12:13:41 AM »
Thanks for the reply, Frugalmax. I a, glad you like the stuff!
I start with a LITKO wooden base. Most of the pieces use a 50mm or 60mm base.
The basic shape is crumpled up aluminum foil . Once I have the desired shape, I hot glue it to the base; then I sculpt the rock formation with DAS air dry clay . I apply a coating of Mod Podge over the DAS sculpt to toughen it up a bit.
Once dry (24 hours) I apply a base coat of a mix of watered down Mod Podge & black acrylic paint (Blick or Americana). to seal it.
The  larger stalagmites are either Master Plumber Epoxy Putty (available from Ace & True Value Hardware or DAS oner a floral wire or armature wire with the largest one getting the crumpled aluminum foil treatment. Same deal on coating the DAS ones with Mod Podge.
The smaller stalagmites & details are done in green stuff.
The stalagmites also get the Mod Podge & black coat. Finally I do a white dry brush &. voila, ready to paint.

I hope that answers the question.

Edit: I originally put my response inside the quote, whoops! Here it is:

Thanks DeafNala for the detailed response on your process! I love the DIY nature of it, and hearing how people scratch build stuff is so cool. Great work as always, thank you!

You're welcome, Frugalmax. I hope it will be of some use to you. I love watching the creative folk on YouTube & seeing how they do things; you're never to old to learn.

This last job of yours was one of the most epic you have ever done! I've enjoyed it a lot! Cheers!

Thanks, Dinos; I can always count on you for a kind commentary. I decided that if it wasn't fun to do it wasn't worth doing. SO I decided to do let my imagination direct the way the pieces would go. It has received an enthusiastic response from Friend Justin.
I have a couple of hills/rock outcroppings underway & added a bunch of linear obstacles/walls to the mix. These should be truly strange terrain.

There was a second picture of them on a smaller branch. Should have posted them both at the same time, haha sorry.

Thanks again. Fram. I added that one to my inspiration album also. They are interesting mushrooms. The gills are normaly hidden under the cap, but these. have the facing outward.

Two more obstacle/walls were finished today:

I started painting #3 of four today. More photos when that one &, possibly, #4 of 4 are done...whenever that is.

Thanks, syrinx0. I am glad you liked the new pieces. I sure hope it is an interesting table to play on. It has given me ideas for a possible cavern photo stage & maybe some chaos terrain.
