i don't think is a material that is hard to find here... i guess that in america is pretty common too! :)
i've seen american guys doing many things with it , so... =)

alternatively i think you can use other materials, but i haven't tested them! :(

Or hit Google and type in 3mm MDF for more choices.
Home Depot and Lowes are other good sources.
Home Depot also sells Hardboard which is something similar to MDF. Might even be the same thing to some people.  :-)

Here's my first real attempt at the techniques you posted. It was a real quick paint job(less than 20 minutes with taping). I took the technique and used it to create more of a temple floor. I think I can also apply the techniques to do Space Ship halls and flooring, dungeon flooring, and streets. Still need to pick up some proper tools(my index finger is bruised from the compass plus it broke). I'm thinking of doing so modular street systems. Alot of fun to do and pretty quick too.

hum!
i love it! that's a different use of the mdf, but it seems to work even for marble look!  8)

actually, i think that the irregularity that for the concrete were perfect are now a problem... you should try the same technique using plasticard instead of MDF... i think that for a marble-looking table should work even better!

if you use instead a plaster panel (just pour some plaster of paris between two glasses) you can make a really nice stonework... i can make other tutorials about it, if you like! ^_^

anyway, that's a really good job!  :-*
only one suggestion: try to make the cracks to start and end on an edge. if they just end in the middle of the block is quite unrealistic!
Fear not to age it too much! =)

This is a really interesting tutorial and the results are great. I'm tempted to try this out myself for some urban streets.
Thanks for sharing!

Great tute- thanks for that.  I found a great way to improve the road texture too...

Before scribing, take a tub of this....

Mix in enough water in to make it like thick paint (use distilled or cold boiled water to keep mould out from the pot).  Then using a sponge, stipple a really thin layer over your MDF.  Let it dry overnight, then do the scribing bit.

Woodflex gives you a nice, gritty, fine asphalt texture (not course like pva and sand), and its really rubbery, so it does not scratch miniatures when they fall on it.

that's interesting, i'll give a try! :)

even if i find that the mdf texture is quite good for the concrete look... not for other purposes but for the concrete is perfect! :)

Hi!

i added another tutorial, but since this one is quite more generic, i put it in the "workbrench" section:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=27069.msg328632#msg328632

just take a look... soon i'll add another tutorial with a good use of the plaster boards!

thanks,
Jack

Just wanted to say that the tutorial for this technique on your blog is excellent. I plan to do a 4'x4' board using this technique although I am avoiding doing any road markings. It's going to be the basis for a city board and I want it to be flexible so lots of broken up concrete/tarmac to place ruins and buildings on.

The one thing I would say is that at first I was a bit sceptical after engraving the cracks etc as they looked a bit too 'sharp' and unnatural. The brush is the real key to it if you ask me, takes the edges off and adds a weathered look to it.

Just about to spray undercoat the first tile I am doing now. Fingers crossed it will end up something like the OP's fantastic work.

The tiles are 1'x1'. :)

I used it on my halo board.  Scriber is perfect for the job. I little brass brush is handy, make sure you clean up the cracks before paint otherwise the fibres clag up the cracks.

Good luck.
