Wattle has been used for centuries as a building material, fencing, and as retaining wall material for fortifications. It was just post driven into the ground, and then thin branches were soaked in water and woven around the posts. It is a little fiddly, but relatively easy to make.
First Drill an
odd number of holes in a straight line in a block of wood. and glue whatever your upright material is going to be. In this case I used sandwich spikes. Tooth picks usually are too thin.
Second, start weaving your wire from the bottom. I used fabric covered floral wire on this one.
Continue wrapping the wire to your required height. If your wire gives out and you need to add more, just start at the end of the row at the exact same spot.
Clip all of the extra wire from the edges, and then superglue every joint. Superglue along the whole steak, and at where the wires intersect.
When that is dry, saw the tops off the wattle, and then saw the whole fence off the wood block.
This part can be cut to size for making wattle walls, or it can be built to size for fencing and retaining walls.
Hope that helps someone out there.
