Operation Downfall
« on: March 18, 2011, 02:55:27 AM »
Hey, Anybody know where the 10th Mountain Division was supposed to land on Kyushu had the invasion of Japan happened in 1945?  My grandpa was to lead a squad in the first wave but I can't find the Tenth on any of the invasion maps.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

The 10th Mountain, as other formations from ETO/MTO was not slated for Kyushu (Operation Olympic) and not even in the scarce planning made for the invasion of Honshu. While it is possible that the division would have been shipped to the pacific as follow up I have not seen it mentioned in any troop allocation for downfall. Indivisual troops from ETO/MTO formation would have been transferred, even formed squads, but I do not have information about the 10th Deployment to the pacific. Is possible that your grandfather was to be transferred out from the 10th to another unit?

Thanks Arrigo, Both my grandfather and his second-in-command told me they were in the initial invasion.  One said the first wave and the other said it was the third wave.  I started looking around at the battle maps and did not see the 10th on any of the initial plans but then found a reference to their role on a 10th Mountain historical website.  Apparently since they joined the war effort late and suffered less casualties relative to other divisions, they were slated to take a leading role in the Japanese invasion.  My grandmother and great aunt told me that they became strong supporters of President Truman after he dropped the A bombs on Japan and saved Grandpa from what he considered a suicide mission.  He served in 10th Mtn Div 86th Regiment I Company the whole time.
