British Home Service uniforms for 1870/71?
« on: May 06, 2011, 04:37:24 PM »
As the title says does anyone know what the British Home Service uniforms would have looked like in 1870/71? Glengarry or similar instead of the spiked helmet perhaps?

I'm savvy with the 1880's and later patterns so any help would be appreciated.

Yep, call me I have what you need. :)

This book is perfect for this kind of information and covers exactly  what Thundercheeks is looking for with lots of pics:

The Thin Red Line. Uniforms of the British Army between 1751 - 1914.
Detailed colour plates showing officers full dress/undress uniforms with similar plates for NCO's and other ranks.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thin-Red-Line-Uniforms-British/dp/1872004008/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304770189&sr=1-1

The only downer is the book is now OOP and only available second hand. I picked up a copy in a second hand book shop for £10.00 a couple of years ago. Well worth it if you can find one.

1869 pattern Shako (never worn "in anger" as it were), with multiple exceptions for Highlanders, Fusiliers, Rifles, etc. who each had their own particular stupid hats.

Glengarry is the undress hat for just about all the infantry after 1868.

Green stuff! That's like Kryptonite to me  ;)

Thanks for your help, I'll do some homework on finding suitable figures.

Empress sell Glengarry heads, if you don't mind your boys not being in their Sunday best.

Every little helps my good man so thank you and there's nothing wrong with being Scottish  ;)

Plynkes, I'm going to form units of regulars, militia volunteers etc so a nice mix of headress is in order methinks. As for Sunday best, Moltke wouldn't dare to invade on a Sunday............. would he?

I think on campaign they would have soon ditched the heavy and uncomfortable shako and gone with the glengarry - much like they did in the Crimea (not the Glengarry of course, but you get my drift). I personally think the slightly silly Glengarry looks much nicer than the very silly shako.

On guard duty or any whiff of ceremonials, they would probably have got the shakoes out though.

Bullshit baffles brains!

Well, it could be expensive but.......... the Foundry Mexicans have vaguely suitable shakos if yoiu are looking for a source of head swaps. For militia you are in luck, quite a few favoured kepis around this time frame IIRC.

The Canadians were similarly dressed during the Fenian Raids (1866-1871) - they wore that snazzy looking shako too.

They actually sent a home guard unit to the Sudan in their uniforms with the standard sun helmet. I have a unit of the General Post Office Rifles that I use in my sudan games. Dark blue tunics dark grey pants & a white sun helmet.
