Some may consider this heresy, but that is my favorite film adaptation of the book to date!

I agree, the best one for me at least.

No, but I notice that Sainsburys have a nice offer on the cartoon boxed set and the last live action movie.

Oh, dear, Lord. Is that "HER-JAY'S-AD-VEN-TURES-OF-TIN-TIN!"?  So bad it kept me away from the books for years...

This stop-motion animation from 1947, on the other and, looks rather entertaining:

Das Boot. Can't believe it took me so long to get around to seeing this for the fist time. It was awesome! My favorite war movie for a long time has been Apocalypse Now, but I think this has tied it in a single viewing.

Awesome, just bloody awesome. I could write a whole thesis on all the things this movie is an example of how to do right compared to other works, and I'll bet many, many film students already have.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

So... should this be in the "Latest NOT inspiring" movie threads? ;)

Saw Contagion last night, Steve Soderburg. Very good science fact rather than fiction, pleasing to see Gwenyth Paltrow's skull cap cut off in the autopsy.

Loads of inspiration for my zed games and government response to any 'outbreak'.

A bit behind the times, I just saw Red Cliff.  Wow!  It strikes me that this mix of big-battle formations and outrageous individual heroics is just what Warhammer and its competitors are trying to simulate.  (Rather too much use of fire and explosions, perhaps, but that's modern cinema for you.)

City of Lost Children. Heaps of imagery that wouldn't go amiss in either the fantasy or steampunk boards here, though the "romance" angle between the two protagonists was a little... weird (an eight year old girl and a full grown man with a childlike mind... ohhhhhhkaaaaaayyyy :? )

...I just saw Red Cliff.  Wow!...

Which version? I've got the 288 minute one and I think it's amazing.  A bit over the top, of course, because we are talking Chinese super-soldiers here but the fight choreography (and overall cinematography) is brilliant.  I particularly like the scene during the 'tortoise' battle when Guan Yu carves his way through the enemy troops using their own spears! Of course, the hero I really liked was the one that gets killed.  Typical! Well worth the viewing, in my opinion.

Ah, La cité des enfants perdus. Loved every minute of it.
If you like it, you should also check out Delicatessen. completely different setting but also fun to watch.

Which version?

The shorter one.  Still impressive and coherent, but perhaps more bladder-friendly!

saw something called "Battle Royal" a truly messed up movie. 40 Japanese student's are pitted against each other each given a weapon and they have 3 days to off each other until there is only one left.

Pretty good movie though.

The sequel sucked.

Saw Tintin today, thoroughly enjoyed it! Never been a fan of the books so didn't know if/what liberties had been taken.

Just seen a rather fantastic norweigan film - The Troll Hunter:

The last troll feels a little OTT, but otherwise really very well done and with good dry humour.
