First non-LotR/PotC Orlando Bloom role I've seen

Sure about that ?
Haven't you ever seen Black Hawk Down ?

Not yet. It's on my "to get around to" list. Modern warfare is not a genre that really sparks me, entertainment wise, so it hasn't felt pressing, even though it does look good from what I've seen.

Didn't find Bloom problematic in Kingdom as he was played as more of a scrappy little survivor than a war horse. Didn't find him lacking in gravitas, he just had gravitas of different sort than, say, the Liam Neeson type. As I mentioned before, I was impressed with his shell shocked/haunted act. As someone who's been through that kind of thing myself I found it to be one of the more identifiable depictions I've seen by an actor.

He did seem lightweight in Pirates, but that series is hardly to be taken seriously anyway. Almost  everyone in those films was comically lightweight, and a protagonist who looks straight off the cover of a YA romance novel was in good company as far as absurdities go.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

I'm not altogether sure it is possible to be too lightweight for the film adaptation of a theme park ride.

Don't Lose Your Head (or Carry On Don't Lose Your Head, as it was rebranded), for gruelling resarch into French Revolutionary guillotine construction as envisaged by 1960s British set designers.
Back from the dead, almost.

Had it for ages but finally watched "Mongol". This is the first part in what turned out to be a series, now to find time over Xmas to watch part 2.

Great movie on the trials and tribulations of becoming the Supreme Khan. Not quite what I have read on his younger days but then nor are the Arthur books in comparison to the movies.
Cheers,

X-Men: First Class.

Yes. Yes, it was. Like a Connery-era Bond with super powers.

Stocked up a bit at the Annual Walmart Boxing Day DVD sale:

Sinbad boxed set (Ray Harryhausen classics) - 7th Voyage, Eye of the Tiger & Golden Voyage $10
Sahara - harmless pulpy romp $3.97
Spartacus, Gods of the Arena - Complete collection $20
Judge Dread - Stallone but pretty good for $5

There were a few other bargains but I already have them.

Not exactly movie and not exactly received. I do however really dig the 2nd (as well as the first series) of 'Sherlock'. One thought 'another beaten to death nag risen from the dead' but it is god damn clever!

The Santa haul was good this year:

Hornblower, the complete series
Dads Army, the complete series
Waterloo
Cromwell
The charge of the light brigade
Captain America.

Gone trough all of them with the exception of Dads Army which did not find favour with the Mrs, along with the complete Sharp series for the third time and feel somewhat hankering for Napeolonics for some odd reason... :D
Best regards

Harry

That fellow on the right is not Nigel Hawthorne.

90s TV movie about Stanley and Livingstone. Saw it at the time and have been looking for it for a bit. Only region 2 version I could find was this Czech one (hence the incomprehensible title), but it is still English language audio, so no worries there.

The Czech for 'English' appears to be 'Anglicky.' I approve, and I think we should appropriate it as our own name for ourselves, as it has a much better ring to it. I certainly feel more Anglicky than English.  ;D
