Look upon it not as a movie but as the basis of some terrain or the start of a 'LAF build something'  comp. If you can build something taller on a DVD than James' 'Wizards' Tower, I'll send you a quid myself.

Greetings

I saw Hemmett yesterday evening. Made me consider starting the whole Film Noir/Gangsters up to the 40s again. :)

Le Mac

Hillarious gangster flic. Hot chicks, funny situations and the whole in french.  :D

Can't say I am a very good french speaker but that movie makes me want to go back to relearn all the french that I have forgotten since leaving school all those years ago.
Don't know if there is an English version, but if you need to laugh, chuckle or a reason to spend 2 hours on the couch in front of the TV eating popcorn, this movie is for you.

Some nice soul gave me this for Christmas, and I watched it last night...

Strangely familiar set-up as we follow a veteran Samurai assemble a crack team to take on a suicide mission. We have all the archetypes you'll be familiar with from every film like this going right back to the original: the raw kid; a couple of weapons masters; a washed-up gambler seeking redemption; a smart-mouthed, non-Samurai outsider*; a couple of explosives experts and... uh, six other guys.

I thought it was great fun, if a little daft in places. Their A-Team meets MacGyver meets Saw death-trap base is silly, as is the way thirteen guys are able to take on literally hundreds of mooks, but I still enjoyed it. A bit like Zulu it has a long build-up to the main action, but once it starts, the fight lasts continuously for the whole rest of the film without let-up. Blimey! Not used to that.

As there were so many of them you didn't really get a handle on the characters of all the team, but the main ones were cool. The main baddie is an utterly irredeemable monster, but I found myself almost taking a shine to him, for his sheer childish delight in mayhem for its own sake, and the fact that for the most part he is utterly fearless.

Big plus points for being entirely bereft of all that balletic wire-work and silly slow-motion flying about that you would have got if this were a Chinese, rather than Japanese film. That stuff really gets on my wick.

If you like Samurai movies that are heavy on the action you'll probably like this.

Bit of a samurai fix for me too

7 Samurai
Yojimbo
Throne of Blood
Shoguns Assassin
Shoguns Samurai
Zaitochi

All good eye candy for my 2012 project

And 13 assasins is a cracker of a film too

Aaaah, I was starting to think I was the only one. Old kung fu student + raised by a physicist = the gibberish mechanics/kinesiology is too obvious for me.

But you had me at "Takashi Miike". I still get cold bowels thinking about Audition.

Speaking of horror...

Creepy atmospheric little period piece horror film. Great visuals and acting, but it openly thumbs it's nose at any desire you may have to understand what's going on. Ambiguity is a good thing IMO, but this one takes it to such an extreme that it comes off more as an undeveloped story concept fragment put to film than an actual story with deliberately ambiguous or unanswered elements. Still, it's creepy and well performed enough to warrant a recommendation.

History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Young Winston - very enjoyable even without the "cut" dream scene

There's an awful lot of swastikas in that trailer, mate. I'm assuming the law is the same for obvious parody, so you might want to replace it with a link so Prof doesn't get a telling off.   :)
