What are you looking for in a sci fi ruleset?
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:19:20 AM »
So Stardred is in the works- sci-fi sister of Skulldred.  Wanted everyone's opinions on what they would expect from a scifi rules set.

I expect just about everything that Infinity delivers with the exception of d20 dice mechanics, and billions of special abilities.

For larger than 10 man skirmish, I expect just about everything that Stargrunt II delivers with the exception of d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 dice mechanics, and billions of special counters.

If you can somehow combine the strongest principles of both designs into something of a scope in-between the two, say 20-25 models per side, I'd expect that to be great.

I expect Skulldred, but with frikin' lasers! :D

Seriously, I'd want simplicity and flexibility. Like Rogue Trader used to be.

Any Bederken sci-fi minis planned? I seem to remember a 15mm adventurer…

Something that can scale from squad to army size and even better if can be used as an RPG too.

I like mechanisms that are clear and make intuitive sense.  When you roll the dice to do something, you should be able to look at them and immediately know what the result was, without standing there and thinking about it.

I don't have much use for SF rules that have a spoon-fed background.  It should be possible to create troop/vehicle types according to my own ideas, or based on ideas borrowed from other sources/genres/media.

Versatility, adaptability. Science fiction is open to a lot of scenarios, and it is that much better if it can provide for a number of them.

I would also have to say something not too complicated and able to utilize any models in your collection (so some character/troop creation system). Ability to scale up to larger battles would be good but isn't really a necessity (IMO). It would be nice if a mechanic existed that allowed "heroes" to act heroically (ie. the hero points used in GW's LOTRSBG or the 'Caster's ability to "feat" in Warmachine) and thus stand out a little more from the basic troops. But again, depending on the direction you have in mind this isn't really necessary.

I'm actually just rambling. haven't finished my AM coffee yet... ;D

Use the force Dave. 'Skulldred' is an excellent set of rules and I'm sure you'll do just as well with 'Stardred.'

Oh yeah, poke me later to add you to the credits for that one Oliver  ;)

Regarding 15mm sci fi- you betcha.  Bederken will be doing 15mm once I get the hang of making them look as cool as I want them to be in my brain!  I do have a backlog of minis I have promised first, but you never know...

Okay heres my checklist so far...
  • Skulldred with frikkin lasers --- check (which covers immediate dice feedback, not having that dice shifting monstrosity, no tables, simple)
  • No gazillion abilities --- check
  • Create your own robots/vehicles/races ala rogue trader era 40k, (everyone gets grav tanks if they darn well want them)--- check
  • More story mission focused -- more like rogue trader era 40k
  • Approx ten to around forty models aside ---check
  • No specific weapon lists  -weapons classed simply --check
  • Any combinations of troop/race/weapons allowed- alien races can team up, no army lists forcing your deployment -- check
  • Remotes, hardware, weapon systems and scenery system Hacking sub-game --check

Heres a list of areas where emphasis can shift... definitely love to hear your thoughts.

Squads
There are several ways to tackle larger numbers of models work in a skirmish system.  The first is to make squads act as one entity using cohesion rules.  This makes firefights a little abstract, as the models that die are not necessarily the models that are obviously exposed.  The old 'heavy weapon guys in the street, but its the grunts in the building that keep dying when I shoot at him' thing.  The 'yeah, but a grunt runs and picks up the rocket launcher' argument seems a little against the verisimilitude to me.  Thoughts, pet hates?

NOT IGOYOUGO or IMOVEALL, you snooze, YOUMOVEALL
I am keeping the each player gets a fixed number of activation counters per turn trick to keep down big battles to a manageable size.  You get a handful of counters, and place them down next to each dude or squad you move.  Once your out of counters, you gather them up and the next player has their turn.  Other ideas involve dropping extra counters next to a model to up its chances, loosing counters when communications are bad or leaders whacked.
