Boxer Rebellion OOB
« on: May 20, 2011, 06:44:34 PM »
My google foo fails me. Does anyone have any links or sources concerning European and Japanese forces in China following the siege of the legations? I know there was a build up of forces following the siege but just can't seem to find anything except a bunch of stuff about a band with the name Boxer Rebellion. :?

Do you want specifically the period AFTER the rebellion, September 1901 onwards or forces remaining after the 55 day siege until then? Or even the forces posted DURING the rebellion?

If no-one else comes along I will post the figures on Sunday as that will be the first opportunity I have.

(hope I have not broke the rules with those capitals ???)

lol lol lol I had that aswell, even in google images.

Your best bet to start with is both Osprey books of the same name (Campaign and Men at Arms), if I remember rightly they have details after the seige.

I think there is a Yahoo group on the subject, but I don't bother with those anymore  :?

Thanks for the quick replies.

In particular I would like to know what forces were in China from September 1900 that participated in the punitive expeditions and what not.

By the way I wish that band would change its name. :)

Go to Wikipedia and search for boxer_rebellion. There is a very lengthy article with multiple links and references.

As a starter, the Allied Relief Expedition that left Tientsin 4th August 1900 consisted of:
10,000 Japanese
4,000 Russian
3,000 English (I take this to be British but this is how it was described in the report of Gen. Sir Alfred Gaselee - British Commander)
2,000 American
800 French
200 German
200 Italian

September 1900 saw a large influx of Allied troops, approx. 20,000 each for British & German and 5,000 American.

The official report of April 1901 gives:
Austria 300
England 18,181
France 15,670
Germany 21,295
Italy 2,155
Japan 6,408
Russia 2,900
USA 1,750
A total of 68,659

I have a copy of the Official History - if there is something specific you want to know I can try to look it up for you.

I would like to know which regiments and battalions were in China. For example, did the French send any Foriegn Legion or Chassuer de' Africa. Did the French send any Tirauelluers (sp) Senagalese?

Hobbit, where did you get your copy of the official history and who wrote it?

Thanks,

whill4

The official history (I should perhaps say British official history) is by Major E W M Norrie. I bought my copy (a reprint) from Caliver Books about 10 years ago & it cost £45 as I recall. I'll have a look through it for you - from meory there weren't any French African troops, the colonial troops were draw from Indo-China. Whilst quickly flicking through I've notice reference to Marine Infantry supported by mountain guns. I'll try to get yo umore detail but it would help if you were looking for detail on a specific operation.

OK, a quick scan of the official history reveals very little about the French, however the original Osprey on the subject does give a good list of troops. I was mistaken - there are African troops.

Units include 9th & 11th Marine Infantry
12th & 13th Indo-China Artillery with 80mm Mountain guns
Annamite and Tonkinese tirailleurs
Algerian Turcos and Chasseurs d'Afrique.
In addition there were sailers from the fleet.
