Fan-tastic stuff! I've never really used it before. Only in little pieces here and there. Anyway it was my birthday today and my goodlady was struggling to get me something so she went into the Games Workshop and got me some Tomb Kings stuff. I know there's an aversion to GW on this site but they are really good models abet a wee bit expensive. Years ago I started my undead army with one box that came with horses, skeletons and a chariot for the same price as the ten Tomb Guard she bought me!!!!!

Anyway I've strayed off topic. I bought some blue foam a while ago and I figured I'd try and use it to make some scenery to suit my army...

I've still got to finish the base, but I think the blue foam is great for sculpting stuff like this.

Anyway I was wondering if anybody had done anything like this before? I'd love to see some pics.......

This guy has... Handy stuff. Very easy to sculpt. That can possibly be a downside as well, because it dents equally easily. You must either be careful with storage and transport, or add some sort of protective layer first. Chipped blue bits are just ugly. So are pores if your paint fails to fill them properly. Other than that, certainly a fine pick for any terrain builder. Apparently you've already figured it out well enough.

Bloody marvellous!

I really do need a tutorial on cutting this blue foam stuff. I've got some but whenever I try to cut cut it it fragments.

I've tried using a Stanley knife with a brand new blade but no luck.

I can't understand what your doing wrong TC. That was done with a Stanley knife and sand paper!....oh and a Biro pen for the details.

It is quite a thick chunk of foam. Maybe I should get some thinner sheets. Where do you source yours from?

it is very good stuff to work with....

I'd put the obelisk on it's own base and extend the back of the sphinx, with hind legs and a bit more meat (er... brick) at the existing leg/body join, that will look great... could do with a bit more mass under the head as well...

a thin layer of premix filler will help protect it from general gaming damage and give it a bit more texture for the sandstone you're looking for...

TC, I think you're just using the wrong technique.

Don't push hard and don't try to saw through it quickly. Instead, use loooong slow cutting motions. The blade will get really dull really fast, so switch as soon as you see tendencies to fragmentation.

Go for a scapel or a snapable cutting knife rathe than a stanely, you can make the blade a little longer and use it like a untoothed saw.

+1 on the back legs, thought it looked a little 'off'

I second that. another advantage will be the price.
for a set of 3 stanley blades you get 10 long snapable blades.

Well it's finished. It's not my best stuff but at least it's done.

I ran out of blue foam half way through this. The obelisk was the last usable scrap bit of it. I don't like the way it sits but I don't fancy spending more time doing it. I don't know about anybody else, but during the LPL I seemed to come up with more things that I wanted to do than I would've if I'd actually had some time on my hands. I've got stuff for a pirate game to finish, then it's stuff for this years BLAM. I'd better get my arse in gear!!!

If I was to do another one I'd make sure not to scrimp on the foam and also use reference material to make it look right!
