Mithrandir, again and again...
« on: June 25, 2013, 04:37:54 PM »
I finally motivated myself to paint my Gandalf figure from the Escape from Goblin town set. Once I had it assembled I realized that I might as well paint up the other plastic Gandalf that's been sitting around my unpainted pile since forever... I had been reluctant to paint any of the Fellowship because I wanted to paint them perfectly... and it's just too much pressure! So, they've been sitting around. But now I figure, whatev*. I'll paint them and if they're good, they're good, and if not, they'll be fine!

I think they turned out pretty well, and I've started in on more characters from both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings boxed set.

Check them out in all their glory here: Heroes of Middle-earth Gallery

From Escape from Goblin Town:

Form the Mines of Moria:

And here are my three Gandalf the Gray figs all together... the middle one painted circa 2004, almost a decade ago!

Thanks
n.

I have to be honest, mate: They all look perfectly fine to me.

I was going to ask why you painted three different ones, but each variant has something going for it, so I can see why.

My personal favourite is the original one, sculpt-wise, but I can see that your brush-wielding has improved since then.

Fabulous job on your Greys! I'm happy for you that you got over that perfectionist beast and painted. They are stunning pieces, beautifully painted. You did great work on his flesh, which I always find tough to do on a figure without much skin showing.

I look forward to more from Middle Earth!

Stunning. Don't ask me to pick a winner.
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

My favourite (model-wise) is the middle one, which I have in metal. The painting on all of them is topnotch!

Yep, the original middle one is the best figure for my money. I've even painted him myself.
The Mines of Moria version is rather good too, but I'm not quite so taken with the latest Goblin Town version - although your paintwork on all three is delightful  :)

I agree, nice paintjobs, and the middle is the best as a miniature. He actually looks like Gandalf, the other two are a bit too generic, they could be any old wizard, really. Maybe it's the beard?

I think it's the hat actually. It's spot on in the middle figure. Much more 'generic wizardy' on the two later models.

It was worth the wait. They all look great. Nice job.

Now on to the rest of the boxed set.
