OK, found the explanation for why Joan of the Jungle is wearing safari gear. Apparently, she was a typical white jungle queen who just became facinated with the white dude who came to "rescue" her.

Here's a good little slide show of old movies and comic book covers with a musical soundtrack:

For a little break from the old stuff, here is a little slide show with backing soundtrack of some of the more modern jungle girls comics from the Frank Cho generation (no real reason for the M rating):

Nyoka, the Jungle Girl, apparently a big hit as a serial. Here's a vintage clip of chapter 10:

Speaking of modern, is 1989 modern enough? Here is a trailer of Shannon Tweed and Bill Mahre in "Cannibal Women and the Avocado Jungle of Death" (ok, had to laugh at that title):

Long ten and a half minute slide show of modern comic art with soundtrack, prehistory this time, mostly cave women and dinosaurs:

1932 was definately a hot year for dancing. This is the second clip of Delores del Rio in Bird of Paradise. Does anybody think this story will end well?

(embedded video was disabled on that one too, another one to look for on YouTube)

Well, things look good for a while in Birds of Paradise. And this chick can find food and fish! She would do fine on survivor. Note that this 1932 film can be found in 6 parts on youtube. It's actually pretty good.

1975 Spanish movie Kilma: Reina de las Amazonas. There used to be a youtube video featuring some scenes from this movie, but it's gone now.

1932 Red Dust starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor, isn't exactly about "jungle girls" in the Pulp sense. But it is about two women from civilized backgrounds in the jungle of Indochina with Clark Gable, and it's a hot movie. The first clip I posted of this movie went off You Tube, so I went back and found another trailer:

(rats, that video was removed from YouTube by the user who posted it, but that movie is worth watching)

1955 Panther Girl of the Kongo was a rehash of the 1940's Republic serial Jungle Girl (Nyoka), and reused costumes and some stock footage from the earlier series. Also, the heroine seems to have had a mixed role. As with Nyoka, she performed a dual role as a heroine who could occassionally kick ass and also as a damsel in distress, who would be captured or knocked out and then tied up. Of course, the male hero in many serials also got captured or knocked out and tied up.  Just a part of the whole cliffhanger thing.  There used to be a youtube video with some Panther girl, but that account of the person who posted it was terminated due to complaints of copyright infringement.

Here's what I mean about Nyoka. Although she is a kick ass heroine, she is also repeatedly a bondage victim. If she was a character in a miniatures game, she would have to have a special ability to endure concussions, because she has had more hard head knocks than an NFL quarterback. She also has Houdini like escape skills.  And she packs a mean punch. Here's another comic slide show, this time all about Nyoka:
