Pirate harbour
« on: June 09, 2011, 12:39:20 AM »
My brother asked me to post some pics of what I have been up to since he has been away on holiday.
I only have these two pics handy at the moment. I have others but I can’t find them at the moment.
I am building a harbour for pirate games.
The first section is a head land. Still to finish painting.

On the back end I am going to have some palm trees. First one started.

What do you think?

Found the rest of the pictures
The original idea mock up. Has changed slightly on the final piece.
On my 8' x 4' table, now painted blue.
Is for 28 mm pirate games using LOTHS

Start of the build using cork donated by oldschoolrebel, polystyrene and pink foam.

Try to make an arch for hanging dead pirates from, as seen in all the best pirate movies.

Covered in gloop made up of plaster, white glue and sand. Added a small bit of brown paint to take away the glaring white.

Building a small gun battery on top of the cliff. My thoughts are that it is just a small rough and ready position built by the locals. Not a full blown castle which would deter any pirates.

They have built a wooden deck for the gun platform.

First coat of paint

For the back end I am thinkING of some palm trees. Need about a dozen to cover the area.
So this is the tree production plant :D

All really really impressive, The palms are looking really good. :)

I am just about to start work on two boards for my pirate fun and am about to base 30 palm trees. ( I got lazy though and bought the Ebob ones) ;)

Talented git  >:(

 lol lol

Lovely stuff, as usual. I also like the palms. I assume they are cartridge paper fronds glued onto copper wire formers, with string wound around dowel or something similar to make the trunks?

I need some tall trees for my jungle, as most of it is short to medium height stuff and this could be part of the solution. Sadly the Ebob's are not really affordable in the quantity I'd like  :'(

Trees are easy to make. Cutting the leaves takes a bit of time though.
Some pictures to show how I make them.

Materials are some bits of wire, masking tape and string.
I then paint the trunks with a textured paint to hide the string a bit.
The leaves are drawn in the computer and then printed out on normal printer paper. Cut them out and glue on with PVA.
Any questions let me know.

Yep. Oldschoolrebel bought a large pack for £10 from 4D model supplies here in the UK

geee wiz!

According to the actual pirates fiever all over the scene another great gaming-table! I like this step-by-step boiling up of scenery, it gives great insights into the work of others.

But I have got a question to the palms:
the trunks were made from wire, so far so good. But up in the thread there is a finished palm, and I like to be sure that "string" meant cord (some sort of packing or sewing material, but organic and not "wire", to be sure) of some sort!?

What I have done with my own palms was using some special rough tape for painting (e.g. window frames). Wrapped around real botanical branches (from top to bottom to simulate the "growing-rings"). On top I put some leafs from a big leaved artificial ivy from a zoology-store. I have to admit Your palms look quite more realistic, though!

best wishes

Yes it is cord. Used for sewing things I think. I picked it up at my old work. Its does the job. I imagine that any thick string will work well.
