A bit of a find, I think...
« on: June 15, 2011, 08:02:19 AM »
Are like me and enjoy NOT spending top $$/€€/££ for wargaming accouterments like ships, vehicles and, as it were trains, but think there are several virtues in cheaper alternatives which can be tarted up to excel over the ready made piece? Well, perhaps you'll see the why I am posting this.

Finding a suitable train set  seems to be a bit of the Graal of several wargaming periods. I've been at it for several years now but what I've fond so far was a semi-nice set while on vacation on Rhodes. But just this weekend I came across this at my nephew's 5th birthday:

I managed to wrestle the source of the kit from my brother-in-law and procured a set at 'Fältöversten' in Stockholm for something llike €30. It is of anonymous Chinese make, by a company which markets it by the rather typical name 'Limited Express'. I got it because of the rail gauge and the locomotive. The set has a good 3-4 meters of plastic doubled sided rails, both straight and curved, a decent length of straight tracks, which is good as it is being the more useful.

The scale is not HO but not 1/56 either. It is close enough though, I think. (Copplestone mini for comparison, as always). The locomotive has better definition and detailing than what I've found before

The Pullman carts I have no use for so if there's any takers they are up for sale. I am thinking €5 a pop but I am open for negotiations.

Does your nephew know you've taken it?  :o

Looks good to me. Any chance of seeing it with a coat of grey primer to show off the details (or lack thereof)?

cheers

Hmmm just the thing I'm looking for... diesel for the drive to the shop might price me out though.

On this particular kit, yes. There is an alternative kit with smaller cargo wagons in stead off the Pullmans and I believe it had four.

Another tip.

Decently scaled track? There is a motorised version of Thomas the Tank Engine that comes with quite a decent bit of track. It's well modelled, the ties even have surface detail, and the track some on a raised embankment that has been detailed with rocks. Looks like it was be easy to paint and drybrush some reasonable detail, certainly better than plain track on the table. I suspect I will have to wait some considerable time for trains to lose their lustre for my son and get the opportunity to pilfer his track.

Very nice find. Don't suppose someone with access to a Pound Stretcher would be willing to buy a few and post out to people?
