.45 Adventure Solo?
« on: July 02, 2011, 03:15:28 AM »
I am a huge fan of Film Noir and the Novels of Raymond Chandler and the like.  I'd love to be able to capture the feel of the genre on the table top.   But.... the guys I game with will not play a game that invloves role playing of any sort.  So, I have to look for game sthat will allow me to game solo.
Can I play .45 Adventure solo?  Will it have the right feel?  If not, are there any Pulp rules better suited to solo play?

You can use any rule system you like to play solo:

One thing you can do is use your favorite rules and create a card driven initiative system rather like that used in "The Rules with No Name" or "Arc of Fire".

I am playing "Strange Aeons" and "No More Room in Hell" this way, and will do so for my Pulp games once I get the figures I need to get that up and running.

I explained the Strange Aeons card system here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=27325.msg332411#msg332411

You can do it for any system provided you determine the goals and actions of your enemies in advance i.e. will they attack all of your figures within line of sight, will the defend certain areas (i.e. attack only if figures enter the area they are guarding), patrol and only attack if attacked and so on.

I am happy to explain it more or exchange ideas if you are interested.

Two Hour Games has "Larger than Life" which is designed for solo play.
I don\'t know whether to be a good example or a horrible warning.

Yes you can. All the Encounters are card driven. As they are random draw, it is easy to play solo. As stated previously, all you need to do is set up the Villain's reaction in advance. And to be honest, that can be simply stated as Mooks (the lowest Grade models) will always rush to attack the hero until they panic. If they have guns, they will shoot from behind cover and slowly try to creep forward. If they have superior numbers they will rush the hero at the start. Only when they find out the hero has some "bite" will they slow down.

You can try out the free demo rules of .45 Adventure 2nd edition here: http://rattrapproductions.com/speakeasy/viewtopic.php?t=2431

Richard etal,
Thanks for the input.  So it sound as if I have several choices for the era including .45 Adventure.  But the Noir atmosphere is basically going ot come from me talking to myself.

Isn't that pretty much what Philip Marlowe does anyway...?  ;)

Haha, got a point there.  No if I could only find decent cheap plastics for the era, I'd be sold.

If you don't mind doing conversions, you could look for some cheap HO or O scale railroad figures. They have lots of people in suits who could be gangsters or detectives.

I usually test out my scenarios "solo". Gives you an idea how they will work out.
