Raiding went both ways. The besieged garrison at Eshowe was constantly harassed by the Zulus, who after Rorke's Drift were reluctant to assault its formidable defensive works. The harassment included skirmishes with the troops guarding the garrison's cattle herd (which could be gamed). In response Colonel Pearson sent raiding parties far and wide to burn kraals and make a nuisance of themselves among the Zulus, roaming as far as twenty miles from the fort.

Their biggest expedition was a raid on the Kraal belonging to Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande (Cetshwayo's brother, who commanded at Rorke's Drift).

The raid nearly turned into a disaster when a lot of Zulus turned up. Pearson's raiders left somewhat with their tails between their legs, making a fighting retreat back to the fort, with Zulus in hot pursuit. There were no British casualties, but there easily could have been. It couldn't really be called a skirmish, as there were hundreds on each side, including horse, foot and artillery, but you could certainly game one of the smaller raids or scouting expeditions with just a few figures.

The death of the Prince Imperial makes for a great Zulu skirmish game.

There are some pics from the game we played at BLAM last year:

PS Great work on those Zulus. :)

It's all coming along rather nicely isn't it, and in a brisk and speedy fashion, too.  :)

Thanks guys!

Here's another:

Royal Artillery 7 Pounder from Black Tree Design.

Though I suppose I should get working on more Zulus next, I have a funny feeling it'll be a unit of the 60th Rifles... just because I feel like painting dark green this week!

Tim, yet more quickly-cranked-out eye candy! Amazing work buddy!

Those BTD Brits don't actually look all that bad when painted up.  :D
