Building the big stuff!
« on: July 18, 2011, 04:14:24 AM »
Hi guys, I've been thinking about trying my hand at building something big. Not really sure what just yet, but definitely dragon or giant sized.

So, what are recommendations for materials?

Assuming this will work best starting with a wire frame, do I use some "industrial" putty to build up a solid based, or go for some DAS for bulk work?

I am also assuming some finer Greenstuff work will be required in later stages of the piece.

So, if you have something to contribute... I want to hear it!

Thanks!

I can't help you with method - but I can demand subject!

How about a nice big ogre like gladiator? Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.  ;)

I'm sure someone with actual knowledge will be along shortly.

I know when my friend was doing large scale figures, he used one of two methods.  Either he built over a mannikin, like an Action Man type of figure, using epoxy putties and whatnot or he made a wire armature and bulked it out with tinfoil tightly wrapped around the wire.  He then covered this with, I think, Super Sculpey clothing, also using this material to sculpt the various visible body parts.  Worked well enough to win him the first Canadian Slayer Sword back in 2001!

I've got a mate who sculpts large figures and busts (he won't be on here as he's one of the laziest gits I know  lol ) and he uses super sculpt over a wire and tinfoil frame as well. He also used to sculpt out of hard wax (you can get it from sculpting shops etc.) but this option was for casting as the wax, even though quite tough, will certainly not stand up to the rigors of gaming.

He did a Ray Harryhausen bust using wax and it looked fantastic  8)

One thing I would suggest is take the time to get your armature right (proportions etc) as this is probably more than half the battle and worry about the details later. Obviously reference material when working is a must, get a book on anatomy to help with the muscle positions and relative sizes. This will help even for dragons and other fantasy types.

One last thing, don't rush it, the super sculpt needs to be baked in the oven and other puttys will need drying times as well. Take your time and it will look far better in the long run  :)

As to what to sculpt...

No idea  lol

You could use artista soft. It's a lightweight modelling paste.
I've seen large dragons made of it weighing next to nothing. bought a pack of it some decades ago, but never used it.
Sculpting isn't really my thing  :?
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
