X-files on the table top?
« on: August 08, 2011, 05:24:35 PM »
Been watching seasons 1-3 of X-files with my wife over the last few weeks. Naturally, it's brought the question "how could one game X-files?". I'd like to play small "skirmishes", with Mulder and Scully (and possible allies) as player figs. Opponents would be anything from greys to hostile government agents, cultists, monsters etc. Semi pulpy modern sci fi horror... kind of. Question is, how can it be made into a proper X-files feeling game, which would have to be more than a shoot-out? What rules to use? What minis? Are there any non Mulder or Scully around. Several agents available I could use if push comes to shove, but are there any perfect matches?

I think you should look into Fear and Faith for rules. They are quick and versatile and specifically made for "normals" versus something strange. Model wise, neither of them have a particularly extravagant appearance so for a model to actually looks particularly like them would require a very good sculpt and a very good paint job, since neither of them has anything particularly recognizable.

Fear and Faith is great and I think even has stats.

I'd also rather blatantly suggest our own 7TV rules which has suitable archetypes in the Investigative Academic. It's certainly intended for TV and cinematic games.

X-Files kinda of existed on never really telling you anything, so you could use some Victory Point mechanic with rewards for uncovering or hiding the truth.

As I have been beaten in recommending 7TV (my first choice) I would recommend "Strange Aeons" by Uncle Mike as these are investigating skirmish rules.
I have a not Mulder and Scully in 28mm these ones if you are interested.

Can’t really help you though I recall seeing a Not-Mulder, Not-Scully couple somewhere and I’m pretty sure they are not the one suggested by elysium64… maybe it came back to me…

However, it does sound like a great project with lots of possibilities.

I'm sure you can find some in Foundry's Street Violence range of minis.

I know a lot of people repainted the Heroclix figures for DEO Agent and Gotham Undercover as Mulder + Scully.
Looking for a set of rules that adaptable for different genres.

Try to look for the x-files card game rules, I played them years ago and think with a little tweeking you could convert them into a skirmish game. The card game also has nice missions called files that could be used for the missions.

Sculder and Mully from Excalibur are tops for this ;)

I think an adaption of .45 Adventure might also work for this project.
Clue/encounter markers, rules perfect for few models per side.

Let us know what you end up with - I've been pondering about this form time to time, too.  :)

Reading this made me think of the "Chaos in..." series of games, specifically because of
http://geektactica.blogspot.com/2011/02/abandoned-village-chaos-in-carpathia.html
and the vast amounts of detail on the Chaos in Carpathian system within. I thought this might work for the discovery of clues and solving mysteries aspect of a X-files skirmish game, especially in a campaign setting, though the weaponry and range of enemies may need to be, er, mildly converted :)

Ground Zero Games do a male and female FBI agent which are spookyly like the two you need, their new site doesnt seem to have a picture but they are perfect for the job. smallish for 28mm but good for 25mm

One of Scott Pyle's associates is adapting the Chaos in... rules into a cooperative mystery-solving game right now. The vibe I get from his blog os more Bladerunner than X-Files, but it sounds like it could work for what you are after.

To be honest, I actually believe that Strange Aeons should be exactly what you're looking for!
Two rather well-powered agents and then some cultist/greys-whatever to oppose them :)

I'll add a third for Strange Aeons. I first thought 'Call of Cthulhu' but then saw you wanted a skirmish game...
