Cadet13's Atlantean Forces Thread
« on: August 27, 2011, 06:25:25 AM »
So, I arrived sort of late to the Atlantis party last spring, and since then I got hit with a whole lot of real life, meaning I didn't get to paint or game much at all. Well, with the start of a new semester here at school, I've revitalized the project. Here I'll post the fruits of my labors, starting with some Atlanteans.

Rural Atlantean Spear-Throwers

This is a levee unit representative of rural Atlanteans from small villages in the jungles of Southern Atlantis. They are armed with throwing spears, and are either unarmored or outfitted with quilted cloth armor.

They are led by an elite warrior from the local temple, dedicated to the goddess of water. This accounts for the warrior's unique helmet crest, which symbolizes a breaking wave.

And a group shot:

And finally, here are a couple of shots of the temple's automaton.

The spear throwers are TAG Tlaxcalans with atl-atls, the elite warrior is a Eureka Hawaiian converted to hold a straight sword, and the automaton is scratchbuilt from various wood bits.

I hope you like them, and watch this space for further updates on the forces of Atlantis, Great Britain, America, France and Prussia.

Thanks for looking,
Cadet13

Good looking stuff. Really like the wooden automoton. Its awsome. Home made?

Perhaps you should consider a wash over your lads flesh to make them a little more distinct. Just an idea though, they look rather good as they are!

Oh yes, these are brilliant! I can see that you've really taken on board all the discussions about square v round shields, padded armour, temple guards (I love the crested helm, almost makes him look slightly Greek, which is of course the other major influence on Atlantean style)... and that's a really amazing automaton! I'd never have thought of building one in wood!

I might have to go and invent more backstory now to say that the priests of the Water Goddess build their automata from a kind of sacred tree that grows straight out of the water in the saltmarshes... a bit like mangrove swamps I guess. Hmmm, lovely!

Thanks for the kind remarks, gents.  :)

Yes, the automaton is home made; it's actually been done since last spring, but I haven't been able to post it. The design is pretty much ripped directly off of the automatons in the Disney Atlantis movie. So-so movie, but I've always liked the look of the 'guardians.'  :D

Good start Cadet, what are you thinking of using for the Europeans and Americans?

I see where you're based, hope Irene isn't causing you any problems.
Don't!

It's good to see someone playing the natives.  Were you closer, I'd totally throw down against you.

Well,l I've actually already have a whole lot of the figures bought, just not painted. And it's more like what figs I haven't used!

Brits: Wargames Factory, Reviresco, Reaper, Black Tree, RAFM, Eureka, Paroom, Perry, Blue Moon, some West Wind Gurkhas and a walker based on a GW Sentinel a friend gave me for my birthday.

Americans: Brigade Games, Artizan, Paroom, Tiger.

French: Eureka, Renegade early WWI.

Prussians: Paroom, Hinterland.

And so far (knock on wood) Irene has only dumped rain on us.

It's good to see someone playing the natives.  Were you closer, I'd totally throw down against you.

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure you'd win: these guys represent 90% of the Atlanteans that I currently posess!  lol More are in the mail though.  ;)

Cadet13

Some more Brits:

A Company from the 4th Btn, 24th Regt of Foot

With the discovery of the Lost Continent of Atlantis, the famed 24th Regiment of Foot (South Wales Borders) was expanded to four battalions. A contingent from the 4th Batallion was included as part of the expedition to Southern Atlantis under the command of Major General Blakeney, OBE.

The Company

1st Platoon

2nd Platoon

Cpt. Lightfoot and Sgt. Llewellyn

Captain Lightfoot is from Black Tree Design. Sergeant Llewellyn and the rank and file soldiers are Wargames Factory plastics. While I know of the general dislike of the WF plastics on this forum (and they aren't great figs, I'll admit), I think I did an alright job with them. Plus, I had them already, they were cheap, and they're painted now, so that's that. :)

Thanks for looking,

Cadet13

I think you did a very nice job. I've used the Wargames Factory Brits too - - and though they're not the greatest figs ever, and there aren't many different poses you can have (and replicating the same two Glengarry heads is worse than the six pith-helmet heads) they are cheap and after all intended as 'unit fillers'.

I think you've done very well with them, and I like your artillery crews too. Nice work!

EDIT: there's some more pics over at my blog: http://redorcsblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/adventures-of-unit.html
