Beyond the Back of Beyond in Russia
« on: November 15, 2007, 04:58:58 PM »
I've been lured in this direction by those beautiful RCW flags. And a new adventure begins. the only trouble is I have practically no figures for the Russian CW. I am currently cutting back on acquisitions, mainly due to storage problems. Thus I have decided to try for a demi-fantasy setting: you get weird beasts and stuff, but no exotic  magic or magic items - mild stuff such as fortune-telling shamen helping out with battle plans or providing a spot of luck, or inspiration, and the like. The advantage is that I should manage to avoid fireballs and the like whilst being able to use some old models.
This resulted in piles of plans being made and factions prepared. And there will be (unless the plan is stillborn):
White Russians
Red Russians (well, d'oh)
A Turkmen faction
A party of Venetian marines (allies of one C. Maltese, sailor, mercenary, adventurer)
Heroes from Torchwood
Faction 6  :?:

At least I have rounded up 15 White Russians so far... not to mention a single representative of Faction 6.

I would make Faction 6 the Spice Girls.

Sounds like a crazy plan you have there. So crazy it might ... just ... work!

What figures will you use for the Venetian Marines? Sounds interesting.

Plynkes, you're guess went far closer than you could have imagined. Think - ah - spice dispensers, add them up to the previously listed band of adventurers, and...

It will work if my attention span remains on track.
As for the Venetian Marines - no idea, so far, but I didn't want to forget that idea once it appeared.

anti-bolo! No, it's just Lt Timothy Dusworth-Tutt and 11th Foot and Mouth polo team.

My ignorance of this period produced a search:
http://bukharaben.blogspot.com/2007/08/colonel-bailey-and-his-remarkable.html

Thanks Aaron - sounds good :) :)

Faction 1 - White Russians
Faction 2 - Red Russians (well, d'oh)
Faction 3 - A Turkmen faction
Faction 4 - A party of Venetian marines (allies of one C. Maltese, sailor, mercenary, adventurer)
Faction 5 - Heroes from Torchwood
Faction 6 - CLASSIFIED only not too tightly....
Faction 7 - Col. Bailey of the Indian Army and co.

5 and 7 are allied, 4 gets entangled with 1 and 7, 3 aid both 1 and 2 at different times..... messy!   8)

I highly recomend the Hopkirk book Setting the East Ablaze mentioned in that blog. Aside from the thrilling exploits of Bailey he also covers the activities of the mad baron Sternberg. You could spend years gaming stuff from that book.

Sternberg! He's one of the many characters mentioned in Corto sconta detta arcana, the Corto Maltese adventure set in this period. This sounds like it's a must-read. Thanks again Aaron.

It is my pleasure to share the Hopkirk goodness. I have yet to meet anyone who read any of his books and did not like them.

Thanks again Aaron.Meanwhile: progress per faction:
Faction 1 - White Russians
21 models allocated, 3 cavalry, 18 foot troops. Status - 8 undercoated.

Faction 2 - Red Russians
1-9 models allocated, including one BIG tank  :o Status - nothing completed.

Faction 3 - A Turkmen faction
To be defined.

Faction 4 - A party of Venetian marines (allies of one C. Maltese, sailor, mercenary, adventurer)
To be defined.

Faction 5 - Heroes from Torchwood
To be defined - but one model has been identified. Said model partly painted.

Faction 6 - CLASSIFIED only not too tightly....
7 models identified, still to be found in the mess a.k.a. workbench. One of these had been completed.

Faction 7 - Col. Bailey of the Indian Army and co.
1 potential model (Bailey in disguise) identified.

Faction 8 *NEW* - Ukrainian Green Army of peasants
Around 30 or more potential models identified, and 5 are painted. They are seriously lacking in firearms, however!

Anyone have any flag pics for the Ukrainian Green and Black armies? They are not in the grand link o' banners posted by Helen, which started all this off.

After a bit of thought:

1908 - the Tunguska event
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_event

1917 - Октябрьская революция
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Revolution

1919 - A Torchwood team enters Russia to investigate reports of some monstrous machine which has been awakened by a Civil War skirmish in Tunguska.

The machine:

And - er - just as a filler - someone who will be hammered into one of the factions, but I still don't know which.....

And as for rules, I'm all set up I think: T&T in the mail; 0.45 on order; GASLIGHT and Fire and Steel on the shelf. DOn;t know how any of these will translate to Daleks, though.  :lipps:
