silicone problem
« on: September 17, 2011, 06:29:19 AM »
I am hoping that one of the LAFrs might have an idea about this.  I am making some resin parts.  With the last two molds, I mixed the hell out of the silicone, and on one of them I had the silicone degaussed prior to pouring.  Both molds came off the masters fine, but on the first cast with the resin, it stuck to the silicone in odd places.  Mostly on flat areas and all subsequent casts come out fine.  I am going to order silicone from another vendor to see if I get the same results, but I have never had this happen before.  Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

I assume you are dusting the moulds with talcum powder first, right?

Both times they were dusted.  I have also been looking at a spray release.  I am still able to sue most of the molds, but some are complete write offs.

i never use talcum powder, and i made around 200 moulds (many many stuff - 5-7 kilos of silicon or more used!), and i'm really happy with the PROCHIMA GLS 50... quite expensive, but not that much.

I also used some cheap silicon (17 euro per kg - a deal!), but actually i'm having some problems with the non - flat areas.

But i never experienced your problem. Probably the problem is with the resin, or with the mixage!

What are your masters made from?

It could be that the silicon is out of date (unfortunately, if a company doesn't rotate it's stock this will happen).

Is there any other member as sad as me who clicked on this thread thinking it was about Dolly Parton?  :'(

Oh, come on, at least you could have referred to Dita Von Teese  ;D
Dolly is so passé...

I would be tempted to agree with you but the problem only occurs the first cast.  The part comes out fine with a couple of chunks of silicone attached.  If I cast again with the mold it works without issue.
What are your masters made from?
Sheet plastic, brass, liquid model cement, superglue, and canopy glue.  Nothing that I have not used before to make masters.

That is the direction that I am heading.  I was just hoping that someone might have an idea as to why this is happening.  Thanks for the reply's all.
