Wing Commander 5150
« on: September 20, 2011, 11:23:34 PM »
Hi,
I'm making a home ruleset to play with miniatures the famous PC game Wing Commander, mainly using 5150SA reaction charts and campaign rules.
You can see my first official test and BATREP at my blog: http://javieratwar.blogspot.com/2011/09/wing-commander-5150.html
So far so good IMHO.
Cheers,
Javier

Looks interesting! I like the proxying of a Terminator: Salvation H/K for the transport ship, it looks suitably huge next to the fighter craft.

For scenery, I think some Asteroid fields (the were, like, in every mission of WC I  ;) ) and mine fields as obstacles.

Random events can probably be ripped directly from the game series itself, as there were surprising events all the time in the middle of a mission, such as friendly craft under attack, an abandoned starbase, pirates that will fight with or against the players, neutral traders, a big asteroid that appears at the edge of the area and moves straight through it, etc...

There are asteroids in both encounters. Great ideas for random events. Thank you very much! :)

Very interesting, I was not aware that 5150 could handle Starship combat. :o 8)
cheers and keep on gaming, Agis - https://www.adpublishing.de

It cannot but they system is generic and robust enough to accept anything you may throw at it. 5150SA is specific for infantry action at platoon level. I just simply adapt it (still on it) to starship fighting.
Cheers,

Sorry, I wrote my post a day or two after looking at your photos  ;)

For more ideas for random events, the game Homeworld and it's sequel should also provide plenty of material. You can find a detailed walkthrough of the first game here.

I especially like this part:
***
 --------------------------------------------------
13. The Karos Graveyard - The Shining Hinterlands
--------------------------------------------------

The Karos Graveyard, the place where the warships of the Kushan were taken,
after their loss to the Taiidan Empire a thousand years before.  The Graveyard
is big and spooky, and there are no Taiidani ships around - but that doesn't
mean it's safe to let down your guard...

If you don't have a GravWell Generator yet, now would be a good time to build
one.  Move all your Multi-Beam Frigates in front of the Mothership, with your
GravWell guarding one of them.  Progress steadily forward until you get the
message about "Hyperspace signatures but no new ships detected".  Then get ready
to meet the Junkyard Dawg.

The Dawg is the ultimate Salvage Corvette, and seemingly indestructible.  It can
steal any ship up to Cruiser-class in size, and it's fast too.  But its one
weakness - gravity fields - will prove its downfall.

***

It was really scary flying through that huge scrapyard of floating, ancient wrecks, only to find that little uber-salvage corvette lurking around :)

Cool batreps! Now get a nice starfield mat to play on ;)

Another idea for scenery I got from playing EVE Online is a massive cloud of toxig gas that damages all ships that fly through it.

If you want to go al-out, you could find some inspiration from the BattleTech spin-off Aerotech and it's successors. It includes rules for gravitational fields from planets etc. Might be interesting to have your fighters fly near a planet or huge asteroid that causes nearby ships to get pulled towards them a few inches every turn :)

I've been considering to buy one. Thanks for the tips!
