20mm Or 28mm
« on: September 26, 2011, 11:20:20 AM »
I am planning to start ww2 gaming with IABSM rules and Two Hour War Games with the whole backgroung of the collection been Stalingrad. I have a few 20mm figures painted but I get a nagging feeling that 28mm my be the way to go when I see photos on line etc. The games I want to play will be on, at the most a 6X4 table I dont want more than 2-3 tanks per game and then theres terrain to think about. Whats the best way to go? Stick with the 20mm figs I have or sell up and get 28mm. Which scale and why? Is the question.

20mm. :D

I`d say that too having played in 28mm and 20mm, lots more out there to invest pennies in and 20mm lets you have a go without spending £100 for 3 or 4 vehicles before you start on a platoon of infantry

I'll preface this by saying I play WWW2 in 28mm, I do not play in 20mm but I would loce to move to pure historicals in the latter scale.

20mm scales up better, has a more realistic engagement scale, tank duels look better, more scale model support. There are also model railway scales closer to scale and cheaper for 20mm.

In 28mm the opposite applies, but individual models are more personal. For this reason I would choose 20mm as you'd li kely want to scale up eventually, but for platoon sized engagements 28mm is cool. 28mm is better for Weird gaming.

One more thing I just thought of, if you only have a 6x4 I'd lean towards 20mm.

Thanks all. You have confirmed the points that drew me to 20mm in the first place. I will have to get my paint brushes out now and get cracking on the figures I have.

I would go for 28mm, for aesthetics and for the general feel of playing with 28mm. I much prefer that scale when it comes to skirmish, and if you are going for small scale battles with few vehicles and tanks, then I suggest that you take a look at Rules of Engagement from Great Escape Games.
The rules are nice and detailed enough to allow for a good skirmish feeling. We have gone even further, to detail things, and to allow for character development, but thats not really necesary of course.

20mm is good as well, and perhaps better if one wants larger battles, with panzer kompanies with infantry support, if its the other way around, I certainly would go for 28mm.

In the end, its up to what one prefer. There are plenty of nice looking vehicles in 1/56 Die Waffenkammer for instance, and they are not that expensive if you consider what you get, same with miniatures, Artizan comes to mind, very nice looking miniatures.

In 20mm you have more versatilty, when it comes to variety of vehicles that you might want, but, I would say that most of what you would actually ever field are made in 28mm now. You can only ever field that many strange panzers, and in the end you will be using Stugs and PzIVs or Shermans and T34s.

20mm!  ;) For one 28mm vehicle you can get 5 model tanks or 150 soldiers!

everything is already said really, cost being a big one these day there are quick built models that look great and only cost 10euro for 2 tanks and the look better then most 28mm tanks/afv

Thanks. I have decided on 20mm now. I am going to buy a pltn from Battlefield minis Stalingrad range and take my time painting them. I plan to get support from Zvezda and AFV from various companies. I will try to post some pictures of the collection as it builds. I do find painting 20mm a little difficult after many years of 28mm and any tips would be welcomed.

RS,
We use 20mm with 76th scale vehicles.  [Some 72nd too, when it's the only game in town.]  Our full table is 7 1/2 by 12 feet with separateareas for the arty as it is usually "out there".  We mount 3 to 4 full TO&E platoons in the attack and two in the defense.

Nuff said.

I think that in the end, its up to what you want to play, or rather what kind of battles you want to play. I am going for 28s my self, but in the end I might make some backups in 20mm for larger scale battles, but that is all in the future.
