NWF skirmish
« on: September 28, 2011, 05:15:44 PM »
I was looking to start some NWF gaming.  Would the hill tribesmen figures from Foundry versus the Foundry guides figures be a good matchup, at least to begin with?  Any comments or recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

Yes, great figures by the Perrys. You can't really do much better, although if you're going to Bengal Lancers, their relatively recent Perry own brand versions from their Sudan range, are rather better than the old figures they did for Foundry.

The Foundry Afghan tribal range are really nice sculpts, I've got lots of them on my painting table right now. Depending on exactly when you want to set your NWF game their armament may be a little obsolete, they are nearly all armed with muskets and jezails. The Foundry Guides have Martinis which places them roughly 1895 and later, by which time the bulk of the frontier tribes had access to decent quanties of Sniders and Martinis. However, if you're not bothered about such things then they really are the best sculpts around. The other thing with the Foundry range is that they don't have many sword only figures suitable for Ghazis - this can be remedied by using some of the Foundry Sikh Wars irregulars with swords and shields. The alternative is the Old Glory range, which are amongst their better figures from what I've seen (I have a few waiting to be painted, but want to do the Foundry stuff first).

The Guides were pretty much the supermen of the Frontier Wars, so I always find that a few of them work well with a mix of the more run of the mill Indian troops - the Foundry Sikhs will do nicely (from either the the Colonial India range or the Darkest Africa range). I haven't seen the Sudan range Indian troops in the flesh, but the pictures look nice and they are armed with Sniders so would do for a little earlier (1880s into early 1890s).

For some good reading on the subject it is difficult to beat Churchill's "Story of the malakand Field Force" for detail and maps.

I'm doing quite a lot of research on the period so feel free to ask.

One thing though, if you want 'em you'd better hurry before Foundry discontinue the range. What they are now calling "hill tribesmen" were their original NWF figures sold as Afghans. Who runs their marketing department? 'Cos he is a moron, getting rid of their best stuff!!!!!!
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

check out Castaway and Askaris miniatures to.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

I have a bunch of the Foundry Pathans painted up.I bought 3 or 4 bags of the Old Glory figs to go with them but sold them off before I painted them. Not because I didn't like the figures but I just decided I didn't need that many Pathans!
I think they would fit well together. They are some of the best of Old Glorys sculpts IMHO.
There were a few poses I wasn't so keen on in each bag but for the price even if I didn't use them they would have been worth it.

As for Foundry
I went to the site after I got the 20% off email. Now granted I have a lot of Foundry figs all ready but I couldn't find anything I wanted to buy. They have gotten rid of sooo many cool lines and emasculated what is left. All the while they keep releasing crap and fantasy lines that are so exspensive nobody can afford to build a army out of them. o_o

I've got the regular "Indian Infantry Skirmishing" bag and they're a little bit slimmer than the Foundry Sikhs, but not hugely so. The poses aren't bad, but what is nice about them is that you get a good mix of turban styles - this allows you to make up units that had "class companies" (i.e. differnt ethic groups within the same battalion). The problem with that bag is that they don't come with their own command figures. So, I'll use them as separate units and will carefully mix in some of the slimmer Foundry command figures or may try to find something suitable in the Perry Sudan range (which also appear to be a little slimmer than Foundry from what I can see).

I've got the Old Glory "Pathan Tribesmen with Rifles" bag - sizewise they're quite close to Foundry and would probably mix in quite well. The sculpting and posing aren't bad.

The main thing with Old Glory is to get a look at them in the flesh - I'd never buy them mail order as some of their sculpts/poses are horrible IMHO.

Are there many NWF fans out there? I ask because it has been my favourite period for a long time, but seems to attract little attention. It is a period that I'd very much like to promote to the top of the colonial gaming agenda.

Hi,

I have some Old Glory Pathans. I think they work well with Foundry.

Check out this picture.

Matakishi did it at the Glam 2010.

Check also this link :

Tactica Convention. Same game other place. Scroll down and you see some figures from Old Glory and Foundry.

Driscoles thats a stunning looking pic!

Empress are releasing a NWF range. I think it is penciled in for November, though I might be wrong on this.

Nice looking set up there - looks like Darkest Africa Balouchis mixed in too.

Notice that they're using Triumph and Tragedy there - what are people's opinions on T&T?

I'd say he loves T&T like it was his own!

I would certainly use T&T for a NWF scenario.

I have a close up of a couple of Old Glory Pathans http://adventuresinlead.blogspot.com/search/label/pathan and say they blend very well with Foundry.
