? about Panther 2 tuuret
« on: September 18, 2011, 12:53:11 PM »
Was talking to some buds and they said that the germans ,late war put the panther 2 turret on panzer4 hull? If true does anyone have pics? I thought the turret ring was smaller on the mk4 then the panther. Thanks for any  help.

Never went beyond the planning stage as the Panther 2 (which was to have a narrower turret than the production Panther) never made it beyond the prototype stage (there's one on display in the US).

Could find a drawing if that helps....

The remains of the Panther 2 turret are at Bovington.

Was outside for years, till someone pointed out that the rusty lump of metal by the car park was in fact a Panther 2 turret...

The design on the Panzer IV chassis was flawed, the uell couldnt take the weight and the gun barrels weight put immense strain on the front running gear.

I still built one in 20mm though...

Yup, and here it is (on a new base):

Might rebase it again at a later date.

thats not a Panther 2 turret thats a Panther F turret also called schmalturn designed in 1944 the Panther 2 in 1942 2 really different beasts, as far as I know there was no new turret designed for the Panther 2.

There was a new turret designed for the Panther 2 that was very similar to the F but significantly better in armour protection.

The visual difference with an F turret is hardly noticable on a model.

The original statement of the posters mates that a Panther II turret was mated with a Panzer IV is wrong though.

It wasn't in the car park, it was in the scrap pile in the workshops.

When I last saw it, it was beside the main car park. The corner opposite the old entrance.
