All your gladiators are nicely painted but I agree that Crusader gladiators seem to be a bit short on legs.

Your ghast is amazing : a fantastic idea and a very good conversion. I might steal your idea.
I wish I were an octopus to paint more miniatures...Cthulhu must be a great painter

Thanks, go ahead, that is the main reason with miniature forums I think - to inspire and be inspired  :)

Last cleaned and undercoated model I had left to paint, will start on the next batch soon - with ranged Gladiators having priority so I can have more dynamic team fights :-)

Started painting up the second batch of Gladiators, giving priority to the ranged weapon specialists since that will bring a completely new element to the arena fighting.

So here's the quick footed dart throwing Gaetulian, probably the best ranged weapon specialist if you look to weapon damage output alone - though don't expect him to last more than 2 seconds against a real close combat specialist.

Yes a very nice project. I have a number of Gladiators myself. Just wondering what rules do you use?

both great from the waist up, but look very out of proportion below that.

Maybe they could be improved by swapping the lower torso/legs with some from standard Roman legionaires, for instance?

(I don't think it should be done now, after painting, it is just a thought for when somebody really wants those characters, but might not want the minis because of the proportions).
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

@ HerbyF, I use the Warhammer Historical "Gladiator" ruleset. With a bit of houserule tweaks applied to make it more interesting and dynamic.

Here's a Velite. In terms of rules this Gladiator is close to the Gaetulian. Though the weapon has shorter throwing distance, and is not as hard hitting. It can however be used in close combat as opposed to the darts which can only be thrown.

Both the Javelin and Dart projectiles also have the secondary ability of rending shields useless if they fail to wound the Gladiator they hit (if he carries a shield that is).

More pictures on my blog. And as the rules for projectiles and their abilities are scattered in the Gladiator book I also wrote down page numbers where you can find the important rules for the abilities and strengths of these weapons.

The Gladiator rules give you 2 archer options, light and heavy - mentioning that the heavy was probably only used in the eastern empire. Nevertheless, that is the miniature I got in the "ranged weapon specialist" pack from CrusaderMiniatures and I'm not complaining.

Since the bow is the weakest ranged weapon, it is good to have the gladiator armed with it decently protected by chainmail and plate armor. Even though it is not sculpted on the model itself, rule wise he carries a Gladius as a backup weapon. I figure his survival rate will be higher than his half naked dart and javelin throwing buddies.

Again and again you are pulling off some nice paintjobs on these miniatures and making them very characterful.

Nice work.

(I hope you didnt mind my criticism of the proportions previously. That was not a slur on your work, which is very nice.  :))

Not at all. The critique is in most cases justified, but there are variations within this range that makes me wonder how many sculptors were involced. Some of the gladiators have normal proportions, others don't. Some have leg wrappings that make their legs look a bit oo thick and also perhaps shorter than they really are.

Two more very cool gladiators!
How about a family photo in the arena Anatoli?
:)

What are you using as bases?
I see from your blog that those are some sort of plastic chips that you cut in half to make 'em thinner, but apparently missed to understand what was their use in the first place...

Sorry for not responding earlier, if you still wonder about the bases they are "tick tack toe" markers pried apart. I bought a bag with 50 such markers for 10SEK so they are the cheapest bases I have ever used  :)

This thread made me buy Gladiator from WH (together with Trafalgar) at the sale...

If I don't run into some very cheap minis, I'll probably buy a set or two of 1/72 plastics to use with the rules. Funds have to be saved as long as I have not secured a new job.

Something like this: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=719
This: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=287
Or this: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1258

should have me covered...  :)

Finally got the time to get back to painting Gladiators, I hope to paint up the bulk of the remaining models before New Year. Painted up the Scissori this afternoon, and since I was asked earlier about a group picture of my collection of Gladiators I took a couple of such pictures as well. More pictures on my blog: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2011/12/gladiator-scissori-and-group-pictures.html
