About armoured cars
« on: October 31, 2011, 11:07:23 AM »
Hi, I'm thinking of beginning a new Back of Beyond project with some friends for a Spanish CON next year... perhaps with a Chinese Warlord army and some Russian Forces...

Now I'm looking for armoured cars suitables for scale with the Copplestone BoB minis.

I've found this site with lovely models
http://www.armour-models.co.uk/model_kit_models.html
http://www.kpunet.net/~lmertz/armored_cars.html
anybody knows this? It's a good scale for 28mm minis?

And what about the Sloppy Jalopy models?

Which are better?
I'll be grateful for your opinion, comments, and more links for armoured cars manufacturers. Thanks

Both the sites you linked only offer 1/35 scale kits, as far as I can tell, which is for almost all purposes far too big to be used with 28mm. For the latter, you would be looking at getting stuff scaled from 1/60th to 1/48, maybe 1/43 tops (I used some 1/43 trucks for my Brits, and it works), and for Copplestone you may want to look at the larger scales (i.e. 1/56 upwards).

Copplestone himself has some very nice armoured cars, so that would pretty much be a one-step solution. Those are 1/56, AFAIK, and seem to be well-sculpted and cast.

The Sloppy Jalopy Austin is easier to assemble than other kits in the range, but still quite tricky, especially considering the suspension and wheels parts. It's a decent-looking kit once finished, though.

I would suggest the Copplestone cars. Decent value for money, good size, and not too difficult to assemble, AFAIK.

Sloppy Jalopy is 1/48. Copplestone, Company B and Brigade Games are 1/56. Old Glory ranges from 1/43 to 1/62 depending on the model.

I had the SJ Austin Putilov at first, sold it for the Old Glory model, then sold that for the Company B model.

First choose the scale, either 1/56 or 1/48. In 1/56 there is Copplestone, Company B and Black Army Productions / Tobsen77, In 1/48 there is Sloppy Jaloppy and Matchbox Models of Yesteryear has a nice Rolls Royce AC. You might find some Tank sprues in 1/48, too.

Ah, I forgot to include Black Army and Tobsen...even though I have vehicles from both guys. Good models, too. Thanks!

I second the Copplestone cars. good quality, good price, easy to assemble and a good selection.

Sloppy Jallopy is nice, but big, esp. compared to 1:56 models,

Don't forget Scheltrum models. they do german/Baltic trucks and armoured cars in 1:56. the only, rare, pictures are on this forum though, not on their site.

and while not an armoured car, Force of Arms do a nice FT 17 tankette.

Brigade Games has a nice 1/56 FT-17 if you're going with that scale:

I've got one of the FoA FT-17s for my Rif War Spaniards:

An excellent model - some minor flash, but great proportions and detail. It looks good next to the RifRaf miniatures, although it's almost a bit big - I think it should work with Copplestone figures too, especially if they are on thin bases (not the 3mm wood washers I used in the pic above). If I find the box my FT is hiding in, I'll try to take a pic with some bolsheviks by CC.

Looks like the Rif-raf miniatures models are the Force of Arms ones!

Also 1st Corps do armoured cars. Judging from the pictures the are a bit rough, but some types, like the Austrian Romfel belgian Minerva are only available from them.
