Lion El'Jonson: Primarch of the Dark Angels
« on: October 31, 2011, 08:23:13 PM »
Hi again:

During this summer, I have been painting a commision. A custom sculpture done by the Argentinian artist nicknamed FreakForge, representing the Primarch of the Dark Angels Space Marines, and two robed servitors carrying the Sword scabbard and the Helm of the Lion.

The painting project has been documented in several entries on my blog, here:

I will present here a summary of the work, simply showing the original pictures of the green stuff model, and the final result...

Here was the concept drawing for the mini. Additional ones can be found on the first link above

Here is a pic of the miniature, made from green and white stuff, plasticard and some GW bits

And, after a couple of weeks of work, here is the final result:

And I also produced a small video for the customer, that you can find here:

Hope you like it...

Funny that, been looking at another Lion El sculpt this week, something about this one doesn't work, I think it's the way the the torso and 'robed legs' are seem odd.

It leaves the figure looking like the feet are another couple of feet below the base, (ie the overall mini looks too short).

Nice concepts and paint, but not keen on the sculpt.
Now water can flow....or water can crash...be water my friend.

I must say that this is truely some impressive work, the concept art being really great.

The miniature dont look to short at all, its perhaps an illusion due to the fact that the belt is sculpted to hang low on the body.

Thanks for sharing this!

One design idea in this miniature was to visually link the Primarch with the dense, primeval forests of Caliban. Hence, the undercloak seen from above looks like a tree trunk, and because of this I decided to paint the cloak in a deep green.

Later I discovered in some Horus Heresy novel that Lion is described as wearing a green robe, so I hit the spot :)

Yeah I know freakforge from WIP and a few other places, this still looks foreshortened sorry, its the bulk of the torso that I think doesn't work. Be worth a comparsion shot with say a terminator and standard marine?
