Craft acrylics...where to find them
« on: November 03, 2011, 04:50:01 PM »
Where are these big bottles of cheap acrylic paints I've been hearing so much about typically sold?  Hobby stores?  Ceramic supply stores?  other?

I need to get a couple of colors to paint up my new playing surface and don't know where to start looking.

I'm in the US BTW if that makes a difference.

Cheers,

Blue

Blue, try Michael's or Hobby Lobby. They both carry a large line of the craft paints and have some colors in 8oz bottles as well. You might also try WalMart if you have noother options as they carry someof the craft paints as well. :)

Lordblackwing beat me to the punch. The ones I use & recommend are Americana, Folk Art, & Ceramcoat.

I would say the general consensus is that Delta Ceramcoat is the best of the bunch with opinions seeming to vary about the other brands.  I have some Folk Art and find them to be OK and have heard that the gold topped Folk Arts are better with heavier pigmentation, though perhaps that is just rumor.
Sadly Michael's, at least in my area, is dropping the Ceramcoat line and replacing it with some Martha Stewart line.  I picked up a bunch for super cheap/clearance.  Happily, Hobby Lobby still has it in stock.  Certain colors are just great, IMHO.  The Delta Ceramcoat Dark Forest Green is great and I am a huge fan of their Charcoal Grey.  I would do a search here and maybe TMP for 'craft paint' and read up.   :)

Try your local art supply stores - our local one  has big 500ml, 750ml and 1litre bottles of acrylic paint for much less than the craft stores. The colour range is more limited than the little bottles, but for scenery use you can often get away with fewer colours.

I prime most of my scenery black before painting, so I have a 500ml black I've nearly emptied, and a 750ml burnt umber I originally got for Mars terrain that I've been using up slowly for years.

They sell white glue in big bottles too, very useful for scenery production.

It is nice to hear some brand names being used. I will try and find these (if they exist) here in Australia.

I've got some Windsor & Newton large bottles of black an and brown I only use for basecoating terrain pieces, since the paint is very thick.
so, not really suitable for the finer paintjobs  :-I

I don't know if Spotlight or Riot Arts and Crafts are in Victoria but they stock Ceramcoat and a bunch of other stuff. I believe you're better off in a decent art store though and Melbourne has dozens of them.
