Covenanter Army
« on: November 05, 2011, 10:12:25 PM »
I have just finished rebasing a largely painted NMA I bought at a Show.  I have a few plastic sets that I was going to make a Royalist army, but.................

I thought it would be too similar and, while looking at Warlords site, changed my mind and decided to make an interesting Covenanter army.

I have the Osprey and Partizan books, already.

Here is my plan:

Two boxes of battalia and a few extras will give me:

Marquis of Montrose
Cuirassier bodyguard
6 Infantry Regiments
1 Highlander unit
1 unit firelocks
1 Unit Dragoons
! unit heavy cavalry
2 Sakers
4 Light guns

Any thoughts?

A Covenanter army led by Montrose would be a very interesting force....

At a pinch, but he was a commander in 1639 and Warlord do not give any other choice, all their other generals are quite specific.

Great idea! Montrose is one of my heroes, oft' neglected I think. Have you read the Montrose novels by Nigel Tranter?
And before I shut up ;D I would use a generic ECW mounted officer for the Earl,as long as he has a hat and a Van Dyke you can't go wrong :)

Montrose is the epitome of the phrase: "Put not your trust in Kings and Princes."

I like the Warlord figure, he has the feel of a generic general. However, in the Osprey book on Dunbar the commmissioners are shown wearing long coated dark grey/ black jackets and breeches with white stockings and a blue bonnet. While John Leslie has a blue bonnet, collectively the three Leslies wear the same kit as an English general.  How do I play this angle?

Surprisingly when Alasdair Macholla's servant was captured at Dundee,he was described as carrying his masters hat ,gloves and cloak; which suggests a more aristocratic outfit for this Isleman often portrayed as a wild highlander complete with two-handed sword...?

Is this a bit like the William Wallace legend?

I googled Painted Covenater and found a speed painting slot, but, more importantly: Perrys.  I have loads of their stuff but not noticed their metal range.  Are they as compatible with warlord as the Napoleonic range?  They have commanders, Moss troopers and artillery that is half the price of Warlord.

I've got both Perry and Warlords & to my mind they're of a similar size.

Eureka also have Montrose, McColla & the Irish Brigade, along with the Gordon Horse. Prices closer to the Perry's than to Warlord......

Perry ECW are much smaller than Warlord. I know you can argue that people vary in height so it isn't a problem, but the (roughly) 6mm difference in length between the muskets makes the two look very odd together, I think.
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

But the muskets often were of different lengths! Horses for courses and all that though!

In scale, that's more than a foot (30cm) length difference. The rackfulls I've seen in collections vary by about a third of that, at most. The Perry ECW are lovely figures, but don't mix with Warlord at all well, IMO. If you need to mix, Redoubt match much better.
