1:72 scale

Man, I'm almost wishing I went 1:72 scale.  I mean, it is obvious that the minis for 28mm are much cooler, and the game will be more fun to play with them...but I'm having a HELL of a time finding a stagecoach or covered wagon and steer in that scale (in the US anyway) for anything close to a reasonable price.  Yet, everywhere I look (including the local train store) I see cheap as hell western stuff for the 1:72 scale.  Everything from figures to buildings to trains to stagecoaches and everything inbetween.

You can find a decent looking stagecoach replica by looking for Pencil sharpeners on E-bay. The Ertl cow town longhorn steers aren't too bad either.

Have a bid in for one of those right now...doubt if I'll win it though.

I am re working a Cowtown stagecoach and I started to make one out of basewood using a drawing found using google. I just need to find some good wheels.  What you can't find you make

Oh, I like making stuff :)...but a stagecoach is going to be a little involved (OK, a LOT involved;)) for me at this point.  Right now I'm just gathering supplies and then I'm going to assemble, paint, construct, and read as fast as I can to get a game going.  A Wagon or a stagecoach would look really good (and provide a nice obsticle) on the scene I have planned.

I know if I ever expereiment with any of the less "cool" genre, like civil War, or the World Wars, I'm going to give the 1:72 scale a shot....but games like fantasy, western, sci fi, or pirates where evey model is cool, I guess I'll stick with the cool 28mm figures :).

Well, for massed battles there's no beating the 1:72 scale when it comes to availability and value for money.

I've been doing Napoleonics for almost 3 decades, and these days everything is available (or very easy to convert using different sets)...

Old Glory has a stagecoach in 28mm (look in the War Paint section, rather than the Cowboy Wars section).  It is a particularly fiddly model, however.  Dixon miniatures also does one, but they are located in the UK.

I saw a toy train in Toys R Us a few weeks ago that was about the right size, for less than $20.  I'm pretty sure it was the same as this one:  http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?t=3078

There were a few versions, including one that looked a bit more "Western".

Hope that helps

Will

They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....

So, the steers are good, but how do the buildings and towns people in the Ertl cow town compare to Foundry or Black Scorpion?

Looks like a lot of terrain cheap!

Thanks!

I think the Ertl stuff would be a good fit to the robust Black Scorpion figures.

I found this for potential livestock, barns and such.

So, the 25-38mm are about 1/64 and Black Scorpion are about 32mm would they be 1/64 as well?

Those are all Ertl products.  I haven't seen the BS minis yet (mine should be here this week), but I think the 1/64 Ertle cattle I've seen in stores look just a tad small compared to my Warhammer figures...but nothing that will cause the end of the world.

If the cattle are a bit short, either glue them on thick bases or just call them calves, until you find bigger ones.
