Looking for an advice
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:00:02 PM »
Hello all

I have a problem and I hope this nice community will help me ;)
I just decided it was time for me to build a table (or at least buildings and other components for a table) for a new game.
The question is : which game ?
On my left, the 1st idea : Chaos in Carpathia (discovered with the Dertflinghans' thread :o)
On my right, the 2nd idea : Carnevale
I fear the more I think of that, the more it becomes harder to choose.

So, any advices ? ideas ? suggestions ?

No suggestions for specific games, but just make sure it is something that you are going to still want to do in a few months time.
If you are at all unsure, I would suggest that you build something that is generic and can cover as many genre's as possible.
That way you will have something that can be used again and again.
Try to avoid something that is obviously only usable for one specific game.

Hi Njall,

I think the big question here is whether you want a game with regular releases that produces its own in-house models or a game with more generic rules that encourages you to seek out your own models. Then there's the rules themself (which I know nothing of for Carnevale).

If these are your two options, I would say a generic european village terrain set would be best as it would work for both games. When collecting/building/preparing terrain for the Dertflinghan campaign, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted to create and just patiently plugged my way along.

Also, I believe that Westwind's new Gothic Horror game is coming our fairly soon as well. I believe it's called "Empire of the Dead."

If you also go with the generic European set, you can play Pike and Shot and Zombies.
Way fun game.

I'll second the opinion that a "generic" table will be useful for several periods and rules than a "dedicated" table.

And in the long term that is a heavy factor to consider.

Moreover with CARNEVALE, because the water features and canals are a staple of the mood.

As for the rules, CiCarpathia is cheap enough (And a VERY GOOD set of rules, as I own them too) as to try and has a strog support from the manufacturers and a yahoo group, OTOH, CARNEVALE is free, and we can expect support, at least for a while, so no looses there.

In the end, it's all to you and how much time, effort and money you and your friends can and WANT to spend in your gaming table.

Hope that helps.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

Thanks for the advice.

I think I'll start with a generic table and a small 18th century band of monsters hunters. (and now that I managed to buy a copy of Black Powder I fear this small band is going to finish as a big army.. oh well, if I were afraid of that I would not be here :D)
