To pee or not to pee, that is the F&IW basing Q
« on: November 11, 2011, 09:32:40 AM »
Sorry, i do so enjoy a dreadful pun

I usually base my figures for 28mm skirmish games on 1p coins [UK].

With F&IW its even more of a skirmish game than usual (or it will be as i'm doing it) so i was thinking about 2p coins just to create that little more "space" between figures even when close together.

Any thoughts chaps? It is of course twice the cost!  ;)

I use 1p coins whenever I can as 2p coins generally fit less well into things like canoes. Canoes are a consideration for me as I game Darkest Africa (2p-based figures just won't fit in my canoes), but it would equally apply for North American gaming in the 18th Century. However many of my figures are based on 2ps, simply because they won't fit on 1ps, others for reasons of stability (guys with big shields running forward, etc.).

A good point well made. I was thinking more "gunsmoke in the woods" but i dare say there'll be some building/canoe action here and there.

Also i have generic 1p slot movement bases. 1ps it is.

Thanks

James

I mixed and matched with my FIW as said it depends on the manfacturers.

Conquest...mainly 1p is good to go
Redoubt a mix, regulars and some indians 1p but many on 2p coins due to base size
Galloping Major, a mix of both but most fit on a 1p

I'd say 1p for the same reason as Plynes, plus more regular units would be in very open order on 2ps. Having said that, a friend of mine does use 2ps and they work perfectly well.

I use 20mm squares cut from plastic card for just about everything, mainly because I think formed units look so much tidier on them  ::) and it eliminates any controversy about which way a character is facing re what falls into fields of fire etc - having run across that sort of gamesmanship in the past  :(

Hi. Facing isn't an issue for the guys i play (or not to that extent)

Its why i don't play tourneys anymore.

Absolutely, that kind of ungentlemanly tricky-dickiness leaves a bit of a bad taste, and it turns out that challenging such fellows to a duel is frowned on these days too  >:D

I too am more discriminating about who I game with these days   :)

OK, I prefer the squares on aesthetic grounds, I know that puts me in the minority but hey..........

For my skirmish gaming I have been using an NZ 10cent piece (about the same size as a British penny), 20mm dia.

However what I am considering switching to are 20mm steel washers.
The advantage being that, they'll still be suitable for skirmish gaming, but then I can also put them on magnetised sabots to rank them up for Black Powder / Hail Caesar gaming as appropriate.

Here I am thinking about my recent work with WF Zulus and WSS plastics...

Two uses from one model, more bang for your buck!

During a long time I used 20x20mm square cardboard bases.

Since 2 years I switched to 20mm diameter round steel washers, and I glue a tiny magnet in the hole in the middle. Very convenient :)

I use 1p coins too.  Same reason that Plynkes mentions, namely fitting into tight spaces such as canoes and the such like. Though I also prefer the aesthetic of a small, thin, round base (but each to thier own of course, room for all tastes here!).  ;) :)

I use slightly narrower steel washers, 20mm, for a similar reason but with the added benefit of them being magnetic. I line the bottom of my canoes with magnetic rubber sheet and hey presto!, the miniatures wont topple as I push the canoes across the gaming board.

I use square metal bases for regulars and round metal washers for skirmish types and Indians.

In 15mm I use 1p pieces for most of my basing for individual / skirmish figures but prefer 2-3 figs on a 2p base in this scale to show troop density etc.  However, 1 euro cent pieces are worth their weight in gold for 15mm but with too few to go round I ration these for small figures only.
