5 Commando, Congo, 1960s
« on: November 15, 2011, 09:48:24 AM »
Some time ago I painted these chaps up as members of Siegfried Mueller's 5/3 Commando, as per descriptions in a fantastic little book, The New Mercenaries.

Thoughts? They are all for sale on my website if you really like them!

I'm not familiar with this book you mention, but these figures remind me of the film called 'The Wild Geese'. Well done!

This is the book: http://www.amazon.com/New-Mercenaries-History-Soldier-Seychelles/dp/0913729728

I have a different copy to the one illustrated, but I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the mercenaries of the post-1945 period up to the 1980s. Especially good for imagi-nations and AK47 Republic wargamers.

Nice job on those. Are they Brittania 20mm?

I,ll have to check out that book too. My fathers mid life crisis took him to Angola in 1976 where sadly he lost his life. He usually gets a mention in such books.

Thanks all for the compliments. :D They are Britannia 25/28mm ones - fantastic figures, I think still available from the chap who bought Dave's stuff after he passed away.

I used to have a manager who spent his twenties and thirties in Rhodesia and Angola with the SADF. By all accounts nasty wars: "We always knew when the East Germans were around, man! their artillery was superb ... and the Cubans we could always spot because they used to cut the tips off their bullets so they'd tumble in-flight, made a damn nasty thrum-whum-whup noise ... and the terrs themselves used mines all the time"
