28mm Elephants - 1st Corps, Aventine or any other suggestions
« on: November 15, 2011, 10:47:39 PM »
I need a couple of fairly generic elephants that I can use in several armies. I'm more interested in impact on the table than button counting. Those that have taken my eye are 1st Corps and Aventine but I've not seen them together to compare and would be interested to see how they do and hear others opinions. I'd also be grateful for any other suggestions. Thanks.

I personally really like Aventine and have 3 for conversion (at some time  :'() in the future for use in our Indostan games. I had the exact same dilemma as yourself and went for impact over accuracy of period. They are big beautiful models and if you ask nicely you can get head or howdah swaps when ordering.

Aventine

I think some miniatures of the crew are warlord games EIR romans, others are conversions with parts of the same range.

The only problem with the Gripping Beast jumbos is that the legs are sort of out at the sides, rather than under the body - so they look fine from the side, but pretty poor from the front or back - because real elephants are heavy, and keep their legs under their bodies.  They're lovely resin castings though - with metal bits like trunks.

Aventine's ellies are much better, anatomically.  They're metal though, and the bodies are in two halves, so they need gluing and a little bit of filler.  Heads are separate too, and need gluing...  But seprate heads mean that you  can swap 'em about and get more variety in your army.

Personally, I prefer Aventine.  I've got, er, five for my Sassanid and four for my Pyrrhic armies.
