I think one can safely assume that Bob Murch has never read David Niven's 'The Moon's a Balloon'.
Niven served in the HLI in the 1930s. Before graduating drom Sandhurst, he was asked to nominate his preferences for a regimental posting. After naming his first two both Highland regiments, he wrote, 'anyone but the HLI'. His reasoning? They were the only Highland regiment who wore trews rather than kilts.
