Convention Level Pulp Action Board in Progress
« on: November 18, 2011, 10:31:43 PM »
I have decided to work on a convention game to run at Kubla Con this coming year... what to do.... So I selected a 50s Pulp Action game to feature multiple groups sent to a Secret Desert Installation (ok, maybe not so secret any longer) each group having its own victory conditions that might put them at odds with some of the other groups. After sketching out some layouts I hit the rewind button and wrote up what I wanted to see going on in the game rather than laying out the game and then figuring out how to get the players to do the scenario the way I would typically lay it out. With the What I wanted to see happen list I am designing an Underground installation with the small complex of buildings above, surrounded by a chain link fence.

Here is my rather different approach to an underground Installation lay out... rather than a small maze of tunnels leading to chambers I have the descending areas concept. On top of the blocks will be walled in areas where you cannot view down over the edges for the most part. A few scattered Elevators will be included plus the ubiquitous stairs. Some lower level interior walls will be put up that are totally destroyable by explosions and the like

In an attempt to avoid a "fixed" project, I'm doing the entire board surface as cement worked area and working at making the "levels" movable. With that in mind I started working on the Raised level sections;

PVA glue and bamboo skewers to secure the pieces over night worked rather well.  Still searching for MDF board in 3mm / 1/8th inch thickness, the local box store only has 1/2 "  thickness.

Progress report:

The foam blocks are all getting covered with foam core board. Wall areas of the enclosed "rooms" will be painted that lovely army zinc chromate green..... very period color. Floors in grays with stains. The Lower wall areas will get the "rock flocking" sprayed on them and then be done in stone colors of chiseled walls with maybe a few areas getting coated in rocks to simulate blasted passage areas.  28mm figure for scale purposes.

An interesting sounding project. I'm guessing it'll look a little like a pit, with the walls made from various platforms?

There is a 4x4 foot board that constitutes what the "block buildings" will sit on. They will not be permanently attached so that I can re arrange them for different games. Players will take an elevator down to the top of one of the room blocks, then find stairs to wind their way to the next "level" or take a cat walk across to a differing same level room. Not all block top areas will be walled in, leaving the party the option of looking/shooting over the edge or perhaps repelling down a level.

I have a multi hundred dollar order Im working up for Copplestone control panels and such, push 6 different action groups to assemble and paint.  A friend pointed to my encounter section list and said "what???
