Expanding Tanzanica

Tanzanica (a Victorian Adventure conversion from GW's Mordheim) is a favorite of mine.  First off the rules are free:

http://www.tanzanica.com/index.htm

You need the Mordheim rules, but they are also free from Specialist games:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480008a&categoryId=1100010&section=&aId=5300009

The rules remind me of the early days of GW wargaming, are relatively simple, and yet are encompassing enough that, with a few modifications, they make a decent rpg.  I suggest using 1d6 vs. Initiative as a dexterity save, 2d6 vs. Leadership as an Intelligence save, and also as a save if the character is killed (make the save and he was only knocked unconscious, and is taken back as a prisoner, with a chance to escape or be rescued).

However, I'd like to expand the game a bit beyond the purely African setting, with rules for:

Turks
Pathans
Russians
Cossacks
Tartars
Burroughsian Martians
Burroughsian cetner-of-the-Earth critters
Wellsian Martians

and any other craziness that would fit into VSF.

Anyway, I'd be surprised if some such conversions had not already been made, for Mordheim, 40k, or some other GW game with similar stats.  If anyone can provide stats or links, I'd be much obliged.

I've never played Mordheim (shocking, I know) but I've messed about with Necromunda a bit, and started working on a VSF version of it where the different Houses became different teams of explorers - (Earl of) Cawdor=Britain, Goliath (Corporation)=USA, (Count) Orlock=Austria-Hungary, (Duc) Du Lac=France, (Minheer) Van Saar=Netherlands (or sometimes Germany); Margravine Escher=Germany (or sometimes Russia). I wasn't totally sure about the last two, but never mind.

Beyond trying to work out some equivalents for Necro weapons in a late Victorian context, I didn't get very far, but it seems to me that the principle would work equally well with Mordheim.

I'll get back to this whn I've had a longer peruse of the rules - looks like a cool expansion to something that's in itself a cool expansion to the game!

I think that as a basic set of skirmish level VSF, or just plain Colonial, rules, it is great.  Adding in a few extras like cannons would be simple, if you wanted to up-scale it some.

Thanks for the link!

I am currently modifying the Mordheim rules for VSF myself, and will have a look through these for ideas.

When I have worked out exactly what I will be using I will post them on here.
It will also be using some of the Necromunda rules, including pinning, but also utilising some of the Necro skills as they are more appropriate for firearm-based games.
Ironically, we are using Guineas to build forces, but in a much more simplified way where you pay for a basic squad and then buy upgrades, special weapons, NCO's etc.
The biggest stumbling block at the moment is the rules for experience, but I think this is almost nailed down.
We aim to start playtesting in the New Year, mainly because I am being slowed by my current Mordheim scenery project (which never seems to reach a good point to stop).
The good thing about this is that we will be utilising the same scenery for both projects, where it will represent the lost ruins of Atlantis.

Will definitely be checking your adaptation out for anything I may wish to 'borrow'!

Thanks.

Same here, if you can be bothered to join a yahoo group, have a look at the Royal_Venusian_Trading_Company rules in the files section here http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pale_Rajah_of_Venus/  I plan on making another version of these for Mordheim, with more of an exploration theme, rather than just two parties beating each other up in the jungle.
